When an artist set out to turn her old painting studio into a residential space whe specialist Havwoods to help them
Situated in a quiet East Sussex village on the edge of the South Downs National Park, The Studio is a contemporary residential build that beautifully embraces the juxtaposition of light and dark. Designed for its resident artist owner, the self-contained dwelling offers a multifunctional space for both creativity and living.
The Studio is situated at the end of a garden in the Ouse Valley. Having lived in the main house previously, and at the age of 86, the owner decided that her artist’s painting studio in a 1940’s prefabricated building would be rebuilt into a small but perfectly formed residential space that allowed her the independence and space she needed to continue her painting, with help and support nearby.
Architect Guylee Simmonds sought to maintain the character that had defined this old painting studio by preserving the old brick chimney and the low flint wall that skirted the building. The building was designed from the inside out, based on the specific needs of the artist and her age. A frameless box window provides an open view over the vegetable garden, whilst the porch extrudes out of the front façade, flooding the main space with evening light. This porch, in combination with a large skylight, frames the full height of a mature hornbeam tree that was planted when the client first moved to the property.
Shrouded in wood cladding, the dark architectural exterior is contrasted with the structure’s bright and inviting internal scheme. A simple form of on-site charred larch and zinc roofing sits above a light flint plinth. Exploring a simple aesthetic with materials that introduce character, The Studio features dark window frames, crisp white cabinetry, industrial fixtures and Havwoods wood flooring throughout the open- plan space.
The plans for The Studio required a durable, hardwearing and attractive floorcovering that would be suitable for use with underfloor heating. Havwoods’ Nature Select Oak Herringbone from the Europlank collection was the specified solution. A collection of pre-finished, engineered planks, the Europlank collection is available in two widths and offers exceptional value for money. A wide spectrum of finishes is offered, from dark walnut to golden oak hues seen in the Nature plank, to offer a visual solution to suit any project specification. The dual-layered plank is available in two thicknesses: a 14.5mm option that features a 3mm hardwood lamella, and a thinner 12.7mm style. Europlank includes a range of widths, from 140 to 260mm with a choice of both square and bevelled edge profiling. As with the majority of Havwoods’ engineered wood planks, Europlank is suitable for installation over underfloor heating, which fitted the core functional brief for The Studio project.
The engineered construction of the planks ensures a far sturdier and flexible floorcovering that will resist the natural
