RECYCLING & WASTE MANAGEMENT

DE-RISKING OWNERSHIP OF YOUR RCV FLEET

Paul Beddows, Head of Sales at Dawsongroup sweepers, explains how to keep your RCV fleet operational and efficient.

In 2019/2020, local authorities collected 25.6m tonnes of waste. And with an average spend of 850m per year on waste and recycling collection, councils are under pressure to ensure operational excellence.

From the way the fleet is financed, to the maintenance of each individual vehicle, owning your RCV fleet can quickly add up across the lifetime of the vehicle. And when it comes to selling the used vehicle, the value will have depreciated significantly.

Safeguarding your investment, and your fleet, through rental de-risks RCV ownership. Rental comes with numerous benefits across the lifetime of the agreement. Here we outline our top five reasons to go with rental.

Adapt to evolving needs Every business has changing requirements from time to time, and even more so over the past 18 months. Demand can change, as can budgets. If you own your assets, you have little room for adjustment when it comes to fleet management. Changing your fleet to match new needs can also be incredibly costly.

Rental brings a whole new level of flexibility. You have more options to change equipment as your requirements change. By staying close to our customers, and understanding their pressure points, we can ensure that their fleet is adapted to fit their operations.

We also offer a lower rate for exchanging or returning equipment, and can offer contract extensions with the same machine or a newer model as and when demand changes. This means that not only can you change your fleet to match your needs, but you can also invest in the latest innovations, without high overheads.

Fleet availability The pandemic and Brexit have caused major disruptions to the supply chain. But due to the buying power of the Dawsongroup, and our forward planning process, we can purchase bulk amounts of stock so we’re ready and waiting for when demand hits. This gives our rental customers the pick of the most prestigious RCVs on the market, including our 7.5 tonne and 12 tonne vehicles.

It also means that local authorities can scale up and down as required, safe in the knowledge that vehicles will be available for rental at the right time.

Keeping you on the road On top of the purchase cost, it is always wise to invest in maintenance. But for large fleets of specialist vehicles, like RCVs, this can be complex and costly.

Some rental agreements come with R&M (repair and maintenance) cover included. For example, our nationwide coverage of field service engineers ensures that wherever one of our machines breaks down, we can have a response to you within four hours.

We also have a 92% 24-hour fix rate, which means we can have your vehicle back on the road the next day. If we can’t get your machine back on the road, we can also give the option of a replacement machine while yours is out of service.

Taking care of your budget Maintaining an RCV fleet can be expensive across its lifetime, from the initial investment, regular servicing and maintenance, and repairs. But some firms offer fixed maintenance costs as part of the agreement price, to help keep costs manageable and fleets operational.

We fix our maintenance costs within our weekly rental rate, meaning that you have less to worry about when it comes to machine break downs and defects. Our team of manufacturer trained engineers provide support from our workshops and on the road across the UK. Our high standard of service and maintenance then enables the residual value to be at its highest at the end of the vehicle’s life, ultimately safeguarding your investment.

Ongoing advice and support A rental contract will likely come with regular review meetings where you can discuss service performance and any out-of-contract costs. Weekly and monthly KPIs can also be set to ensure that you get the best solution for your business at all times. Having this ongoing support and advice can make sure that your fleet investment is as efficient and cost-effective as possible.
