As premises adjust for people to share spaces, equipment and amenities, workplace hygiene takes greater priority than ever before, and FMs need to efficiently create safer and more hygienic environments to protect staff and visitors, says Kimberly-Clark Professional.
Due to the pandemic, the world as we know it has changed. People are living, working and thinking differently, and many changes and habits will endure. All businesses have been touched by higher hygiene expectations, with the need to create cleaner and greener workspaces that support employee wellbeing, with the appropriate tools and facilities being readily available.
In a recent interview, Scott Farmer, CEO of US business services company Cintas Corp, said: “Moving forward, it’s my opinion that COVID-19 will do to workplace and public space cleanliness what 9/11 did to security.”
Behavioural changes brought about by the pandemic are here to stay, and with the ongoing need to limit the spread of germs, facilities managers are experiencing major shifts in both operational and cultural norms. As premises adjust for people to share spaces, equipment and amenities, workplace hygiene takes greater priority than ever before, and FMs need to efficiently create safer and more hygienic environments to protect and reassure staff and visitors.
“Businesses must be open to new ways of working, and it is vital for offices to plan and prepare for ‘new normal’ measures, from limiting physical interaction and avoiding sharing devices, to ensuring good hand hygiene,” said Olena Neznal, Vice President of Kimberly-Clark Professional EMEA.

Research commissioned by Kimberly-Clark Professional in 2020, showed significant behavioural shifts in the workplace that prioritise infection protection. It highlighted that 79% of respondents are more aware of hygiene practices outside the home, whilst only 21% are confident about hygiene and cleanliness levels. Overall, a huge 85% would avoid visiting a facility that was not COVID safe and 66% want hand sanitiser and cleaning supplies available at all times.
All businesses must respond to higher consumer hygiene expectations. The recent research showed that in the office, 82% identified washrooms as most important area to improve hygiene levels, while in healthcare, 70% wanted to see more hand sanitiser. In hospitality, the three critical areas which needed to improve were: public washroom, bedrooms, restaurants and bars, while in foodservice, only 13% felt confident in the levels of cleanliness and hygiene.
