CLEANING
SUPPORTING THE SCIENCE
Principle Cleaning Services tells Tomorrow’s FM how it supported the Francis Crick Institute with its pandemic response.
When Principle Cleaning Services began providing its services to the Francis Crick Institute, it had no idea that the next 18 months would be a world away from anything it could have planned.
The company began working with the Crick, a biomedical research centre, in December 2019 - providing daily office cleaning, porterage, pest control and hygiene services, after a successful tender exercise. The mobilisation of the contract meant current staff were transferring to Principle via TUPE, so its senior management team worked hard to ensure a smooth handover.
As the world was hit with the COVID-19 pandemic just a few months later, all non-essential science was halted so the Crick could focus on COVID-19 research. This meant that the facilities needed to be adapted to support this major initiative and Principle’s services also had to evolve.

“To start, we provided an additional 12 full-time team members to the existing 33 we already had on site,” said Victoria Jamarillo, Portfolio Director at Principle. “This would allow the scientists to safely carry out their vital work with Principle operatives working in the lab spaces as assistants to sanitise all key touchpoints, as well providing assistance to the logistics team.”
Principle’s porterage team also worked alongside the Crick’s facilities management team to reconfigure all the collaboration spaces across the building to ensure that they followed correct guidelines.
Victoria Jamarillo believed that keeping everyone in the loop was key. She said: “Regular meetings and informal catch ups with the Crick’s team were crucial to our success. We also continued with our monthly client
