Hello and welcome to the September issue of Tomorrow’s FM.
Cleaning has obviously been front and centre for the past 18 months. It has gone from what some would describe as an ‘invisible service’ to one that now forms the basis of health and safety measures as employees and employers alike return to the world of work, whether that’s in hybrid form or not.

It’s a point that Mark Hazelwood, Director and Co-founder of Clenetix, expands on in his article this month: “Historically, the pervading view of cleaning is that it is a low skilled, non-core service, leaving it at the mercy of procurement teams’ cost-cutting efforts. This view could not be more incorrect. But we have seen how, since early last year, the industry is increasingly being viewed as mission-critical and demonstrating its value in a way that feels unprecedented.”
We have a tonne of opinions and expert advice in our Cleaning feature this month. From Principle Cleaning Services’ work with The Francis Crick Institute to DOC Cleaning explaining how the new definition of sustainable development is handing cleaning contractors a key supporting role, there’s plenty for you to get your teeth stuck into.
Elsewhere, ASSA ABLOY and TUV SUD give their views on BIM in our Construction feature, and TORK looks at the challenges of equipping the washrooms of a secondary school for the Educational and Student Facilities section.
We also have our essential guide to the Facilities Event, which returns to NEC, Birmingham on 7th – 9th September. Should any of you be attending the exhibition and it co-located shows, please do get in touch as I’d love to meet FM professionals both new and old.
Enjoy the issue.
