COVER STORY

In terms of increasing comfort, the leading component for users was washroom elegance. Specifically, users told us that a unified and efficient experience is fundamental to creating that elegance.

Washrooms with too few resources, spread around the space, that must be shared (or bypassed if users do not wish to linger), break up the experience, frustrate users and increase health risks. Incorporating water, soap and dryer into the wash basin, as in the XLERATORsync system, provides resources for each user and improves efficiency experience.

Unified washroom resources and fittings that facilitate shorter but more hygienic experiences acknowledge the needs of customers and help them feel comfortable.

Acknowledging sight and sound We wanted to find out how sensory sensation feeds into washroom experiences. What are the visual and auditory components that impact a user’s experience?

56% of users simply expect washrooms to be a noisy environment with a further third ranking washroom noise an irritant. Predictably, users identify hand dryers as the loudest component in a washroom setting and other research bears this out.

This may currently be seen as necessary as 70% of users say washrooms must have multiple hand dryers. This acknowledges the role dryers play in sustainably creating safer, drier hands, and presents a challenge for operators.

The majority of operators that we spoke to have made the transition to hand dryers over paper towels, with two- thirds also saying paper towels cause a littering issue. Therefore, a focus must be placed on the implementation of the technology that users expect to see, but without the audible irritation they experience.

We asked operators if washrooms should be branded, and 69% said it was unnecessary to extend branding to facility washrooms.

Users are clear they want to feel comfortable in washrooms, and part of that comfort is consistency with other areas of an establishment. One of the benefits of the XLERATORsync system is that it gives washroom operators a wide variety of customisation options to keep the user experience consistent.

Advancement through green technology Users and operators understand that modern technology is crucial for improving efficiency and driving sustainability.

“72% of operators do not have

improved sustainability aims for their washrooms.”

For users, the desire for better technology ranked higher than the need to install more resources. 73% of washroom operators acknowledge that desire, saying they aim to improve washroom experiences through technology.

Perhaps most surprising of our findings is that 72% of operators do not have improved sustainability aims for their washrooms.

Facility washrooms are where multiple sustainability issues intersect. Within a single environment, the use of resources such as paper, water and energy meet a drive for sustainable cleaning and chemical responsibility.

Consumer studies show that commercial sustainability is an increasing factor in consumer decisions, with 73% of UK consumers wanting to be more sustainable.

Commercial sustainability can be incrementally improved through better, more efficient technology and washrooms need to be included in the larger sustainability picture.

Reassuring reopening There is rightly a lot of focus on post-pandemic hand hygiene. The germophobic eye the public has developed may never subside. By extension, washrooms will become the epicentre for that focus. Shop floors, desks and counters can incorporate hand hygiene provisions, but every part of a washroom will be under greater scrutiny.

Users are looking for an efficient, unified experience when they use public or shared washrooms. They want an elegant experience free from disconnection. For continued success, operators must acknowledge and accommodate the needs of users by providing better technology, more resources and an efficient washroom journey to house them.

Reopening your business is important, but reassuring your washroom users they are safe, is vital.

Excel Dryer are at the forefront of hand dryer technology. XLERATOR dryers have a <1% failure rate and were developed in partnership with ex-NASA rocket scientists to ensure the best results for facility managers and end users. Their latest offering, the XLERATORsync system, is a highly customisable, touch-free system with water, soap, high speed, low energy hand dryer and anti-bacterial custom wash basin for a unified hand-washing experience.
