A sealed soap cartridge that slots into place inside the dispenser will remove the need for manual refilling and speed up the process. For example, refill cartridges for Tork Foam Soap can be inserted into the dispenser within seconds.
C-fold dispensers offer a relatively low hand towel capacity which makes it tempting for the cleaner to jam as many towels as possible inside the unit. But it can be hard for the user to pull out a single towel from an over-stuffed dispenser.
As a result, towels will be extracted in clumps and some will be left on the units or dropped on to the floor where they will create a soggy mess. And this will generate more work for the cleaner.
A good alternative is the Tork PeakServe system where the hand towels are compressed by 50% and are inserted into the dispenser in bundles. Refilling takes place at the cleaner’s own convenience simply by inserting a new bundle, and the fact that the towels are withdrawn singly helps to reduce consumption and avoids messy towels being left lying on the units.
Many high-traffic washrooms are equipped with jumbo toilet rolls which offer a long-lasting supply and help to prevent run-outs. But it can be difficult for the cleaner to predict when the supply will run out which means they will need to make multiple washroom checks and may also be tempted to replace a roll before it has been fully used up.
The Tork SmartOne Twin Mini Toilet Roll System allows the cleaner to insert a new roll at any time at their own convenience to ensure a continuous supply.
The process of refilling will also be sped up if all dispensers are quick and easy to open, either with a universal key or via a push-button. All Tork Elevation dispensers offer these options.
In order to keep the dispensers constantly replenished, the cleaner will often be expected to manually transport boxes of soap and paper to the facility. Carrying large,

unwieldy boxes of toilet tissue and hand towels can be exhausting and lead to excessive strain on the back.
All washroom products should therefore be housed in easy-to-transport packaging. For example, Tork Easy Handling packaging has comfortable handles allowing staff to carry two packs at a time, one in each hand. The containers are easy to open without the use of scissors or knives and have features adapted to different finger sizes.
Among the most mind-numbing washroom tasks that a cleaner has to undertake are the repetitive checks that need to be made on the soap and paper supplies. Many of these checks will be unnecessary, but supplies cannot be allowed to run out since this could compromise hygiene and lead to dissatisfied customers.
Tork Vision Cleaning allows cleaners to check remotely when a washroom dispenser is running low on soap, toilet paper or hand towels. This allows them to stay ahead of the game and removes the need for multiple unnecessary physical checks. Tork Vision Cleaning also incorporates people-counters which enables cleaners to check remotely whenever a washroom is experiencing particularly high usage and might need an extra service check.
After months of negotiations, strikes and demonstrations, cleaners at Barts NHS Trust accepted a deal last June to receive ‘special leave’ equivalent to a lump-sum payment for working during the pandemic.
In October 2024, cleaners at the Department of Education were awarded a rise and full sick pay following a lengthy dispute that had lasted for more than a year.
Cleaners are overworked and unhappy – but they are fighting for better conditions. And often they are winning. In the meantime, facilities managers should do all they can to make their lives less onerous and more rewarding by providing them with the best and most ergonomic tools for the task.
