CLEANING & HYGIENE CHECKING-IN ON SUSTAINABILITY
The hospitality industry is increasingly seeking to boost sustainability whilst maintaining exceptional cleaning standards. Alistair Scott, Sales Director at Robert Scott, shares insights into how UK hospitality businesses, from the largest groups right through to independents, are achieving this with innovative cleaning products.
Eco-Friendly Effectiveness Recognising the growing need to reduce synthetic chemicals, plastic waste, and your carbon footprint, Robert Scott has been continuously evolving Electrochemical Activation (ECA) technology since introducing it to the market.
Its innovative Toucan Eco range offers a cost-effective and environmentally friendly alternative to conventional cleaning products. It requires just two natural ingredients, water and salt, activated through electrolysis to create a multipurpose disinfectant cleaner. This process produces hypochlorous acid (HOCl), a compound naturally found in the human immune system, along with a small amount of sodium hypochlorite (NaClO). With a gentle pH of 7.8–8.5, Toucan Eco is certified to antiviral and antibacterial standards (EN 14476, EN 16777, EN 1276 and EN 13697), killing up to 99.999% of germs.
The low carbon technology can replace over 80% of synthetic cleaning chemicals, reduces plastic waste, energy and water usage, and transportation. Indeed, switching to Toucan Eco saves over two litres of water, four million joules of energy, and a quarter of a litre of oil for every typical one litre bottle.
It also removes the need for over 80% of single-use plastic bottles, cutting down on plastic pollution and carbon emissions from manufacturing and transporting traditional cleaning products.
Cedar Court Hotels Cedar Court Hotels, a group of four-star luxury hotels in Yorkshire, adopted the Toucan Eco system during the COVID-19 pandemic to protect guests and staff, improve the cleaning regime, and reduce their environmental impact.
It is now used across all areas, from reception and dining areas to bathrooms and each of the more-than-500 bedrooms.
Within a year, the group saw a 75% reduction in cleaning chemical costs and a full return on the initial investment, as well as improved efficiency for team members, who are using and being trained on just one product.
“More importantly though, I know my teams are using a safe and effective sustainable product in all areas of the business,” says MD Wayne Topley. “We are using a safer, milder chemical with 100% less packaging, which uses only natural ingredients.”
The Restaurant Group One of the UK’s biggest hospitality businesses, The Restaurant Group (TRG) has a diverse portfolio of well- known pub and restaurant brands.
In 2021, TRG began rolling out Toucan Eco Workshop systems across 210 of its sites. This saved 2.7 tonnes of plastic packaging and 35,000 tonnes of chemical distribution. The Group saw a return on investment within six months.
Alchemilla To reduce its use of chemicals, award-winning Nottingham restaurant Alchemilla installed the Toucan Eco Active system. It can produce 10 litres of disinfectant and cleaning solution with one single activation – the equivalent of around 16 spray bottles. The system is used across all areas, from front-of-house tabletops, glassware, and mirrors, to kitchen worktops and restroom facilities.
This has proven ideal for in a busy environment where quick, efficient cleaning processes are essential, and harsh cleaning products wouldn’t be suitable.
Head Chef and Proprietor Alex Bond commented: “The results have exceeded our expectations and knowing we’re using considerably less chemical product and further reducing our plastic waste output is exactly what we set out to achieve.”
The restaurant has seen an average total saving of £200 per month on the cost of chemical cleaning agents, and a huge saving on the volume of plastic waste.
The future of sustainable cleaning The shift towards environmentally friendly cleaning solutions is demonstrating how reducing harmful chemicals and single-use plastics is not only possible, but can provide significant additional cost-savings and performance benefits.
For hospitality businesses, this is a win for customers and staff, the bottom line, and the planet.
