CLEANING
responsible. But such hand-written records create a scruffy, unprofessional appearance and are easily overlooked by staff members who may forget to fill them in.
We at Essity have addressed this issue by developing Digital Cleaning Plans. These remove the need for handwritten records because every cleaner and cleaning manager has a digital record of who has cleaned each facility and when. Jobs are allocated via the software and team members can be alerted to any urgent needs via their phone which means that any issues are dealt with much more swiftly.
Today’s use of apps and enhanced communications channels are streamlining airport cleaning in other ways, too. Some airport cleaners are now being equipped with trolleys emblazoning a mobile phone number and a request for passengers to What’sApp them if they detect a cleaning issue. This way cleaners and members of the public are able to communicate directly with each other when issues arise. ‘Cleaning via What’sApp’ is now in place in several European airports including Berlin’s Tegel.
Besides technological solutions, airport cleaning can be made to be much more efficient if the right products are in place.
High-capacity washroom dispensers that give out only one towel, sheet of toilet tissue or dose of soap at a time will run out less frequently and reduce the number of maintenance checks required. Systems that can be topped up at any time rather than when a roll or dispenser has actually run out will allow staff members to carry out refills at their own convenience.
Soap should be supplied in sealed cartridges since these can be snapped quickly into place with no messy filling required. Tork Foam and Liquid Soaps are all supplied in sealed cartridges that can be replaced in seconds.
not it is required. Sensor technology and new communication channels allow operatives to stay on top of the task and be kept constantly up to date with cleaning needs.
For example, our own Tork EasyCube system uses sensors placed in washroom dispensers and in other strategic places to monitor usage. ‘Connected’ dispensers allow cleaners to tap into refill data via their smartphone or tablet, removing the need for them to wait for cubicles to come free and tediously check each dispenser in turn. Once they know in advance which soap and paper dispensers are running empty they can specifically target those units.
Tork EasyCube is now finding new uses beyond the scope of the washroom dispenser. Sensors placed at the entrance to washrooms allow cleaners to monitor visitor levels so that they can carry out an extra check on those facilities receiving particularly high traffic. This helps to reduce the amount of firefighting required on the part of the cleaner.
Tork EasyCube is now in place in airports all over the world including London’s Heathrow, Singapore Changi Airport, Paris Charles de Gaulle and Dallas Fort Worth.
In the past, washroom maintenance checks were traditionally recorded by means of a chart on the back of the washroom door detailing the times of visits and the cleaner

A high-capacity hand towel dispenser will also help to keep refill checks to a minimum. Tork PeakServe makes life easier for cleaners because it caters for over 1,000 washroom visitors between refills - 600 more than most other dispensers. The towels inside the unit are divided into bundles and a new bundle may be inserted at any time, which means the unit can be topped up whenever it suits the cleaner.
The Tork SmartOne Twin Mini Toilet Roll System will also ensure a continuous and long-lasting supply of toilet tissue. The system reduces consumption by up to 40% compared with jumbo roll dispensers since it delivers one sheet at a time, while its SmartCore core removal system enables fast and easy refilling. And a second roll may be inserted into the unit at any time to fit in with the cleaner’s schedule.
Airports are businesses like any other and customers who are unimpressed with their cleaning levels could take their retail spending power elsewhere and choose a more congenial transport hub. It is therefore important that airport managers ensure that their cleaning regimes are carried out as efficiently and seamlessly as possible – and by happy cleaners.
