10 QUESTIONS

10 QUESTIONS WITH... CERI HENFREY

In each issue we ask an FM professional the Tomorrow’s FM 10 Questions, this month we spoke to Ceri Henfrey, Head of Operations at Moneypenny.

Q4

IF MONEY WAS NO OBJECT, WHAT CAR

WOULD YOU BUY?

If I won the lottery I’ve always said that I’d treat myself to a blue, soft top Bentley. That said, I’m also fascinated by electric and driverless car technology so the Tesla Model S has to be up there too.

Q5 Q1

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB?

I had a Saturday job working in a local newsagent when I was 11, before getting ‘poached’ by the convenience store up the road who paid me 20p more! After finishing university, my first job was working in a call centre for BT where I joined their graduate scheme. Three years later I was promoted to Call Centre Manager and on the road to a career in operations.

Q2 Q3

HOW DID YOU GET INTO THE FACILITIES

MANAGEMENT INDUSTRY?

In the early days of my career I was responsible for managing large contact centres. Over time this naturally evolved into a facilities management role encompassing elements like building management, services, contents and business continuity.

WHO, IN ANY OTHER INDUSTRY,

DO YOU MOST ADMIRE?

It would have to be the co-founders of Airbnb. Their innovation, vision and growth is just incredible. They also have a great approach to employee engagement and their offices are amazing, both subjects close to our heart as a company.

52 | TOMORROW’S FM

HOW WOULD YOU IMPROVE THE

FACILITIES MANAGEMENT

INDUSTRY? I’d make it more about visitor and user experience, less about cost. When people question why we offer our employees a free breakfast in the morning, for instance, I tell them the answer is simple: how often do they see someone here running late and arriving at their desk feeling fraught before the day has even started? It doesn’t happen. Instead, our team arrive a little earlier, sit down with friends, enjoy their breakfast and have the best possible start to the morning. This in turn benefits our clients and the fantastic service that they receive. It’s a virtuous circle and the return on investment is immeasurable.

Q6

WHAT DID YOU WANT TO BE WHEN

YOU WERE GROWING UP?

An air hostess. I was, and still am, slightly obsessed with travel and thought this would be my passport to travel the world.

Q7

IF YOU COULD HAVE A SUPER POWER

FOR A DAY, WHAT WOULD

IT BE AND WHY? To be invisible. I believe my operational instincts are pretty good, but if I was invisible I could finally know for sure that I’m doing the right thing.

Q8

IF YOU COULD HOST A DINNER PARTY

WITH ANY THREE GUESTS, DEAD OR ALIVE, WHO

WOULD THEY BE AND WHY? My first guest would be Whitney Houston. I’m not a massive fan of her music, but I’d love to find out what went wrong for her life to end so sadly. Second on my list would be Steve Jobs. I’ve always been fascinated by Apple and Jobs’ personal story of failure followed by huge success is something I think we can all learn from. Last, but not least I’d invite Barack Obama. Charismatic, funny and intelligent – he just seems like an all round nice guy.

Q9

WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE

FUTURE OF THE FACILITIES

MANAGEMENT INDUSTRY? To me it’s about how we can combine a personalised visitor and service experience with market leading tech.

Q10

NICK OETTINGER, MANAGING

DIRECTOR FROM THE FURNITURE RECYCLING GROUP: HOW HIGH UP IN YOUR COMPANY’S LIST OF PRIORITIES IS WASTE

MANAGEMENT? It’s enormously important to us. As a company we aim to avoid creating waste in the first instance. We work with a specialist waste disposal company to ensure that absolutely everything that can be recycled is, and our office was designed to be environmentally sustainable with features like rain water recycling and ground source heating.
