Recently, one of allmanhall’s long-term clients, Channing School in Highgate, expressed a real interest in setting out to achieve the ‘Bronze Food for Live Served Here’ Catering Mark, awarded by the Soil Association.

The Solution Very experienced and familiar with the process, and drawing on knowledge gained from helping organisations achieve such esteemed catering accreditations, allmanhall advised their client on the criteria as laid out by the Soil Association.

BADGE OF HONOUR

Here, allmanhall, catering-related procurement specialists, explains how their hands-on client support approach

and change management advice inspired a school to achieve a much sought-after Catering Mark.

Gaining accreditations can seem like a time-consuming process. However, having one or more accreditations is an effective and inspiring way to demonstrate an organisation’s uncompromising commitment to meeting, and even exceeding, official standards, acknowledged by an independent third party. It can give confidence and support catering objectives.

The Soil Association’s ‘Food for Life Served Here’ scheme started in schools but now recognises catering standards across hospitals, care homes, universities and colleges, workplaces and various visitor attractions. The scheme is widely recognised by the Department of Health and quoted in the Government’s Plan for Public Procurement as a way to reach good or excellent procurement criteria within that particular framework.

Gaining a ‘Bronze Food for Life Served Here’ accreditation requires proof that the majority of food served at a site is freshly prepared and that menu items are free from trans fats, sweeteners and additives, and cooked using sustainable and ethically sourced ingredients by trained chefs.

In this instance, it was especially important to look at the site’s suppliers’ role in achieving any such accolade. For example, a decision was made to ensure that the site’s butchery supplies were all procured from an accredited butcher. A seamless transfer was managed by allmanhall to ensure all meat and poultry was now Red Tractor assured, in line with the ‘Food for Life Served Here’.

Key to achieving an accreditation is ensuring that the correct certification and documentation has been gathered from suppliers. This can be a very labour-intensive and bureaucratic process. With that in mind, allmanhall provided the client with support and resources to ensure that the correct documents were presented to meet the required standards in a timely manner.

The Outcome Channing School are delighted to have achieved the ‘Bronze Food for Life Served Here’ Catering Mark, testament to their dedication to serving fresh meals and sourcing products sustainably, in line with their organisational objectives.

Judith Hibbert, Catering Manager at Channing School, said: “It was a time-consuming process, but nothing was too much for the team at allmanhall. They’re always on hand to help and always a friendly voice at the end of the phone. A great team of people.”
