10 QUESTIONS WITH... 10 QUESTIONS WITH….
In each issue we ask an FM professional the Tomorrow’s FM 10 Questions. This month we spoke to Sean Fisher, COO, Atalian Servest.
Q1 Q2
Q3 Q4 Q5
WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB?
My first permanent job was as a kitchen porter while on my gap year, as soon as I arrived in London.
HOW DID YOU GET INTO THE FACILITIES
MANAGEMENT INDUSTRY?
When I returned to the UK after studying IT in South Africa, I struggled to find work within the networking and engineering sector. I was however offered a role as a supervisor at a Nightclub in Sheffield back in 2003 and technically it was for the same business I work for now…
WHO, IN ANY OTHER INDUSTRY,
DO YOU MOST ADMIRE?
The people I admire most are the members of my family. However cheesy or cliched it may sound, I honestly get the most inspiration from them.
HOW DO YOU CHALLENGE THE
STATUS QUO IN FM?
I find that listening to people who operate outside of our particular industry, especially some of our retail clients, has helped me and the team to challenge the norm. It’s all about looking outside and away from what you know.
HOW WOULD YOU IMPROVE THE
FACILITIES MANAGEMENT
INDUSTRY? Firstly, I’d want to make sure everyone concentrated on doing the basics well. Some clients do this very well; usually where you get to work as a partnership, rather than a supplier / client relationship. True partnerships

allow for excellent continuous improvement throughout the entire term of the contract.
Q6
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE NOVEL?
It’s been such a long time since I’ve read a novel, but the last book I read was by Jack Welch, who ran General Electric, called ‘Straight from the Gut’.
Q7 Q8
IF YOU COULD HAVE A SUPER POWER
FOR A DAY, WHAT WOULD
IT BE AND WHY? I’d like to be able to fly at the speed of light… Why wouldn’t I want to finish the day and then jet over to the Caribbean to enjoy an afternoon of sun, sea and a couple of cold beers?
IF YOU COULD HOST A DINNER PARTY
WITH ANY THREE GUESTS, DEAD OR ALIVE, WHO
WOULD THEY BE AND WHY? Nelson Mandela – what a truly inspirational person. Francois Pienaar
– being able to have the opportunity to talk through the experience of playing and winning the Rugby World Cup in 1995 would be incredible. And, my grandfather – I would love to be able to bounce ideas off him and get his view on things.
Q9
WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE
FUTURE OF THE FACILITIES
MANAGEMENT INDUSTRY? Advanced technology and robotics will certainly play a major part in the future of our industry; however, the most important part will be our people. Technology and robotics will always need the human touch, and if we train and look after our people and start integrating with technology then we can deliver new and truly innovative and excellent service.
Q10
SHARMIN AKTER, MD OF TOTAL
SOLUTIONS GROUP ASKS: TECHNOLOGY IS MUCH TALKED ABOUT BUT MOST OF FM IS STILL RUN VERY TRADITIONALLY. WHAT IS THE BIGGEST OPPORTUNITY FOR ADVANCES IN TECHNOLOGY IN THE NEXT 5 YEARS TO MAKE AN IMPACT ACROSS THE WHOLE
FM SECTOR? If we can get the synergy to work between a smart building, robotics (which need to become more cost effective) and our people, then we will see our industry shift dramatically.
