EDITOR’S VOICE EDITOR’S VOICE

And so, the rather eventful year that was 2018 has reached its conclusion. From a national perspective, Britain’s collective conscience has now been

so successfully dulled by the Brexit debate that repeating the compulsively

annoying, yank-your-own-teeth-out ‘Baby Shark’ song on a Monday morning, caffeine-free commute to work offers a more intellectually enlightening and engaging experience than listening to another word emanating from the murky depths of Whitehall.

On an international level, Donald Trump continues to divide opinion like serving an anchovy and pineapple pizza at a Christmas party for the extended family, having just listened to your overweight great aunty explain why a recent prescription of laxatives has given her bowels “a sense of new-found freedom”.

It’s not all bad though. The FM world has seen some interesting developments. Primarily, the British Institute of Facilities Management (BIFM) has now

officially changed its name to Institute of Workplace and Facilities Management (IWFM) to help “…drive change and extend the profession’s impact beyond the built environment and unlock its potential value to business and society.”

We’ve got a jam-packed issue for you this month and it wouldn’t be Christmas without a trip to the leisure and retail sector. Andrews Sykes looks at the

importance of ensuring you’re one step ahead with a building’s climate controls and Chubb argues that integrated technology has a key role to play in easing urbanisation pressures and maximising the shopping experience.

In the Hotels & Hospitality Facilities section, Essity’s Stuart Hands asks how important the instagrammability of the washroom is compared to the basics of hygiene, cleanliness and efficiency, and Regenex addresses some difficult questions for the hospitality laundry sector.

We also return to a favourite feature section of our readers, CAFM & IT, with Urgent Technology explaining how new tech innovation could soon transform the profession and The Changing Workplace exploring the rise of challenger CAFM platforms.

All that remains for me to say is thank you for all the support you have given me in my first year at Tomorrow’s FM, it has been, and I hope will continue to be, a real pleasure working with you.
