ESSENTIAL MAINTENANCE AT DIZZYING HEIGHTS

Theme parks are renowned as a haven for thrill seekers, but when it comes

to the technicians who are contracted to maintain them, the adrenaline rush is just another element of the job, Berenice Northcott, Managing Director of Access North Structures explains.

Off-season upkeep is an essential part of any theme park’s seasonal cycle, to ensure the attractions are safe and sightly before families arrive at the park. So, when the Access North Structures (ANS) team was enlisted by Mellors Group to conduct crucial pre-season maintenance work at Fantasy Island Theme Park, there were strict timescales in place to complete the required works.

A renowned as destination in the North East of England for families and thrill-seekers alike, the Ingoldmells theme park has been a familiar landmark on the Skegness skyline since 1993. However, when it was purchased in 2016 by international leisure specialist Mellors Group, it was clear that certain alterations were required at the 41-acre site.

With numerous attractions overseas and in the UK, Mellors Group has vast experience within the industry. At home, these include the Nottingham Winter Wonderland and the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park Beach, along with

the siting of an array of giant observation wheels across the country. As these ventures demonstrate, the group certainly knows how to bring in the crowds.

When the family-owned business announced its ten- year plan to continually reinvigorate the Fantasy Island Theme Park, its first undertaking was a £3m investment in essential maintenance works, to prepare the site for its reopening in spring 2017. As well as improving the destination itself, it is hoped that this ongoing commitment to the park’s upkeep will help boost tourism along the whole of the Lincolnshire coast.

Rising to the challenge Unsurprisingly for a theme park, there were a number of complex, elevated structures that required attention on site. One of the first of these was The Odyssey. At 167ft high, the inverted rollercoaster was built in 2002
