10 QUESTIONS WITH... 10 QUESTIONS WITH…
In each issue we ask a facilities management professional the Tomorrow’s FM questions. This month we spoke to Chris Lyons, Managing Director of Systopia.
Q1 Q2
Q3 Q4 Q5
WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB? My very first employed job was in the vending
industry at the age of 16. I started out as a Trainee Engineer and quickly rose through the ranks.
HOW DID YOU GET INTO THE FACILITIES MANAGEMENT INDUSTRY?
In 1986 I took the brave decision to start my own business at just 20 years old, providing products that suited the FM industry with regards to food and beverage solutions.
WHO, IN ANY OTHER INDUSTRY, DO YOU MOST ADMIRE?
I’m sure he is a popular choice within this column, but I would have to say Bill Gates. Not only is he a founder of the company that has been at the very forefront of technological development for decades, but also for what he now gives back via the charitable foundation he created alongside his wife.
IF MONEY WAS NO OBJECT, WHAT CAR WOULD YOU BUY?
Easy choice! It would be a Lamborghini Aventador. This car is a thing of beauty and I would love to have one parked in my driveway - although I may need to get it modified to fit all my kids in!
HOW WOULD YOU IMPROVE THE FACILITIES MANAGEMENT INDUSTRY?
I think it is a really exciting time to be involved in the FM world, especially with the increased emphasis on innovation. As we move forward, I believe that technology and the connected workplace will be a key to success and more knowledge in this area would be a great advantage.
Q6
WHAT DID YOU WANT TO BE WHEN YOU WERE GROWING UP?
Like millions of children up and down the country, I dreamt of becoming a professional football player – scoring a goal for your country at a World Cup would be the ultimate ambition. We have just seen this summer how football can capture everybody’s imagination.
Q7
IF YOU COULD HAVE A SUPER POWER FOR A DAY, WHAT WOULD
IT BE AND WHY?
I would definitely opt for the ability to read people’s minds. That would provide a fantastic way to make people feel good about themselves!
64 | TOMORROW’S FM Q8
IF YOU COULD HOST A DINNER PARTY WITH ANY THREE GUESTS,
DEAD OR ALIVE, WHO WOULD THEY BE
AND WHY? As a boy growing up my hero was Steve McQueen, so I’d definitely have ‘The King of Cool’ at the party. Nelson Mandela has to be invited as he was such an inspiration to everyone. I would also like to have Johnny Cash around my table – I’d like to hear tales about his journey through life and he could also bring his guitar.
Q9
WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE FUTURE OF THE FACILITIES
MANAGEMENT INDUSTRY?
As mentioned previously, I firmly believe that exciting times lay ahead, however the sector must continue to embrace new technology. It will also remain important to prioritise customer engagement whilst reducing operational costs. FMs can save time and effort by choosing the right managed service solutions.
Q10
COLIN TARSEY, CO-FOUNDER AND DIRECTOR AT ACTIVE FM
ASKS: WHAT MOTIVATES YOU?
I am motivated by the ability to wake up each morning and be in charge of my own destiny. I thrive off my responsibility as a business owner, to motivate my team and create new and exciting products.
