When planning and designing an office space a lot of effort is often spent choosing furniture and deciding on the best layout. As a result, less tangible elements such as lighting can often be overlooked. However, lighting can have a serious impact on the health, wellbeing, and productivity of staff members, and as such should always be a key consideration throughout the design process.


There is no one size fits all strategy for office lighting as each office will have its own set of lighting needs, and varying levels of natural light coming into the space - if any. Office lighting needs to be adaptable as many areas will be used for a variety of tasks, for example, meeting rooms that require brighter lighting for board meetings might also be used for giving presentations which would require a lower level of lighting. Additionally, different employees will have different needs meaning what might be considered the ‘right’ level of light in one scenario might be completely wrong for others who use that space.


Lighting around the office When installing office lighting it is important to take into consideration the use of each room and plan the lighting accordingly. These are some of the key spaces around the office and some top tips on how to light them.

Reception lighting - Office entrances or reception areas are typically the first spaces visitors step into, so first impressions are important. The lighting used in an office reception should reflect the rest of the building and give visitors an idea of what to expect from the company. For example, using bold colours and quirky fittings will create a fun and laid back atmosphere, whereas more subtle minimalistic fixtures will set the tone for a more corporate environment.


Meeting room lighting - Meeting rooms are often used for a variety of different purposes, and the lighting needs to reflect that. These spaces can be used for anything from informal one-to-one catch ups, to delivering important presentations, so having the ability to adjust the lighting is crucial. Installing dimmer switches or having the ability to only illuminate selected parts of a room provides flexibility and helps ensure the rooms are always fit for purpose.
