tend to be spread out over a wide area. This means the staff have their work cut out to keep a constant check on each washroom.

Moving from one washroom to the next, manually checking the dispensers and monitoring cleaning, takes time and effort. It is also a monotonous task because while one washroom is being serviced, another may be running out of supplies – and it is impossible for the cleaning team to be everywhere at once.

A significant drop in customer complaints was recorded at the Apenheul Primate Park.

Over the past few years, however, this situation has been considerably eased in theme parks and zoos all over Europe. Tork EasyCube has proved invaluable in venues that are spread out over a wide area since the system removes the need to manually check each dispenser.

But people are less willing to queue for the toilets because here they will be wasting precious time that could be better spent at the attraction itself.

It is surprising how easy it is for a bad washroom to spoil a day out. Review sites such as Tripadvisor are filled with reports from outraged customers about dirty or unhygienic washrooms where they were forced to queue for substandard facilities. Issues such as soap and toilet paper running out are a particular gripe since this basically makes the washroom unfit for purpose.

Hand hygiene is obviously crucial in a theme park where most visitors will be staying the whole day and either picnicking on sandwiches or buying burgers, hot dogs and other items that are eaten with the hands. If hand washing and drying facilities are inadequate this could lead to cross- contamination, stomach bugs and a miserable summer holiday.

One of the chief issues at a theme park or zoo is the fact that attractions

Tork EasyCube works by means of sensors placed inside dispensers and on toilet cubicle doors. These keep a constant check on refill levels and washroom traffic and the data is then uploaded to the internet. Cleaning staff can access the figures from wherever they happen to be – whether they are on site or not. This allows them to stay ahead of the curve and ensure that maintenance checks take place where and when they are needed.

Tork EasyCube has resulted in fewer complaints, higher customer satisfaction levels and a more motivated staff at sites all over Europe. Sweden’s Furuvik Zoo, for example, achieved its visitor satisfaction goals 46% more frequently after installing the system.

A significant drop in customer complaints has been recorded at the Apenheul Primate Park in the Netherlands after the system was installed. And in a recent survey at the Grona Lund theme park in Stockholm, the customer satisfaction index registered an all-time high – with figures well above 80% - for having clean and fresh toilets.

Meanwhile, cleaning teams at these attractions have reported experiencing a greater level of control and improved customer feedback since Tork EasyCube was installed. They also claim to have

more free time to carry out other important cleaning tasks since they are no longer wasting their time checking dispensers.

Besides connecting the dispensers there are other measures that summer attractions can put in place in order to ease the cleaner’s task. For example, all dispensers for toilet tissue, hand towels and soap should have a high capacity and help to control consumption to reduce run- outs during visiting hours.

The Tork SmartOne® works well

in these environments since the dispenser is designed to give out just one sheet of toilet tissue at a time. This can reduce consumption by up to 40% minimising the risk of run-outs in busy periods.

Many high-traffic washrooms use liquid soaps that are refilled from bulk fill dispensers. However, these are time-consuming to replenish and may also lead to messy spills on the floor and units.

A highly-suitable soap solution for busy theme park washrooms is Tork Spray Soap. Each refill delivers 2,650 doses of soap, which means that each cartridge lasts longer than most liquid soap options. The system also eliminates the risk of mess associated with bulk-fill liquid soaps.

Air dryers are often installed in high-use washrooms at summer events. However, air dryers take much longer to dry the hands than a paper towel and this may cause queues to congregate around the dryers. High capacity paper towel dispensers are therefore the best option here.

It is difficult to ensure that every toilet at a busy summer attraction remains clean and well-stocked at all times. However, “connected” washroom dispensers can greatly help the situation – as will washroom dispensers that ensure a long-lasting supply; that can be refilled easily and naturally reduce consumption. Such features will ensure that no summer day out is spoiled by poor toilet provision.
