FEATURE
Protecting wellbeing FMs have an increasingly important role to play in the wellbeing of building occupants. They have a duty of care to ensure that the occupants are warm and comfortable in a space.
Carpet is exceptionally good at keeping in heat, with the insulation value being up to ten times higher than that of other floor coverings. Unlike hard floors, carpet has a low density and also requires little energy to warm up, so can significantly reduce energy and heating bills.
When compared to hard flooring, carpet also provides underfoot comfort and reduces standing and walking leg fatigue, which is particularly useful in sectors such as retail. It is also inherently slip resistant, unlike hard non- impact absorbing surfaces, carpet can reduce the risk of slips and falls and the severity of injuries if accidents occur.
Controlling noise Noise is more than just an inconvenience in facilities. According to The Noise and Wellbeing at Work 2019 survey by the Remark Group, noise in the workplace was shown to negatively impact the ability to complete work accurately and on time by 65%. More than 40% of respondents also reported that noise at work had made them feel stressed.
Carpet has the ability to absorb sound, meaning it can significantly impact noise reduction. In fact, experts believe it can reduce airborne noise by up to 35%. As well as destroying the reverberation and echo, carpet can
create a quieter environment, better social interaction and increased privacy.
Flexibility The pandemic has created an increased focus on flexibility. With configurable fixtures seeing a surge in popularity, spaces have had to continually adapt to meet changing rules and guidelines. A key skill in FM is doing more with less, and there are often big expectations for the adaptability of your facility, without the budget to match.
Therefore, flexibility and low cost solutions can often go hand in hand. Carpet tiles, which can be simply lifted and moved, are one way that facilities managers can both remodel spaces and support wayfinding. We manufactured our Guide social distancing carpet tile range to be both functional and modern, to subtly convey vital messaging.
Design The right design elements can help to create an engaging environment. Carpet offers an endless range of styles, colours and surface textures, which are constantly evolving.
Additionally, carpet’s unique design flexibility allows for wayfinding, visual cues, and can increase the overall positive aesthetic of the environment. Our leading Inspiration Collection has a wide selection of modern colourways, textures and multi-level creative patterns to suit any modern commercial space.
