The demand for effective deliveries has never been greater, but how are FMs in charge of fl eet management utilising technology to their advantage? Andrew Tavener, Head of Marketing at Descartes Systems UK, examines what organisations are doing to streamline operations.
The ongoing Coronavirus pandemic continues to evolve and present challenges for every organisation and individual – for fl eet managers and the logistics industry, the effect has been signifi cant. With repeated lockdowns and more people working from home, with certain groups needing to shield over the last year, there has been a resultant dramatic increase in the number of home deliveries for all types of goods.
In fact, the pressure on deliveries has grown in general as companies have continued to negotiate the changing consumer environment to one more heavily focused on ecommerce. The resultant demand for effective deliveries has never been greater, and these challenges have highlighted the importance of utilising technology, including implementing routing and telematics software for effi cient fl eet management in order to optimise delivery effi ciencies and provide a good customer experience.
Pressures on delivery It is no secret that ecommerce has grown exponentially due to the pandemic – from 20.2% of all retail sales in January 2020 to 36.3% in January 2021. This increased

pressure from the online sales channel, coupled with driver shortages, means that seamless and cost-effective delivery options for consumers are essential in order to meet ever-growing demands.
Additionally, Brexit has been a source of delivery chaos, causing extra delays and uncertainty for goods coming into the UK from Europe. This added pressure on vehicle logistics demonstrates how companies should be making their delivery services as effi cient as possible – effective fl eet management has never been so important.
Improving operational effi ciencies For fl eet managers dealing with extra delivery pressures, implementing telematics technology in parallel with routing and scheduling software will signifi cantly improve operational effi ciencies. Moreover, it will also increase customer satisfaction in response to increasing demands for timely deliveries, rising concerns over driver shortages and growing customer expectations.
