We find out more about the charity that has been offering financial support to elderly people for more than a century.


Friends of the Elderly has been supporting people for over 100 years. The organisation aspires to a society where older people have the opportunity to live fulfilled lives.


The charity delivers services that are personalised to individual needs and integrated with local communities. The fundamental values of the organisation are to promote wellbeing, strive for excellence, treat people with respect and keep everyone safe.


ALLEVIATING STRESS


AND WORRY Friends of the Elderly’s first grants service was established in 1905 and, in 1914 the charity received over 28,000 letters from people requesting support.

Today, one-off grants, of an average of £300 each, offered by Friends of the Elderly help relieve the stress and worry oſten experienced by older people living on a very low income. One client recently said: “I wish I could put into words just how much it means. The financial assistance is so reassuring. I don’t have to choose between keeping warm and eating.”


Grants are awarded towards household adaptations, the purchase and replacement of essential items, the cost of equipment to get online and utility bills. The grants service is available to older people over state retirement age living on a low income in England and Wales. Grants are offered for help with:


• Home essentials – to cover the cost of replacing everyday items, small home repairs and mobility adaptations.


• Digital connection – can be used towards the cost of equipment, such as tablets and smartphones, as well as broadband costs.


• Financial support – to help with unexpected bills and large costs, such as utility bills, funeral costs or moving fees.


CARING FOR THE COMMUNITY Friends of the Elderly supports people to live well through the charity’s care homes, community services, befriending programmes, grants and special projects like Football Friends. Working with partners, the organisation also
