That type of true cleanliness has to be approached in a different, but not necessarily more difficult, way. Logically, dirt and soil cannot cause harm if they are no longer present. Therefore, efficient cleaning and removal of these contaminants must be a priority. It's a simple concept which is oſten overlooked.

To deliver this level of cleaning means utilising a pure cleaning solution, that is uncontaminated by what’s been used before. It’s imperative to get the chemistry right and use the recommended amounts correctly. This is where we ditch the habit of over-disinfecting, and use the appropriate solutions to cleanse the surface. In this way, there’s an instant improvement in the level of cleanliness, because a fresh solution dose is being used at each stage.

When the cleansing is complete, the most important aspect is to remove the soils. Don’t spread them around on a mop or a cloth and give them an opportunity to regenerate. Instead, use some form of high-flow fluid extraction to remove the used solution and store it separately for safe disposal later.

The relevant surface should also be checked to ensure that cleaning has been effective. This can be easily undertaken by using an ATP test, which looks for levels of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) – the universal marker for animal, bacterial and mould cells. ATP meters can test that floors are not just clean, but also free of germs.


Data from tests carried out by the Toxics Use Reduction Institute (TURI) Surface Solutions and Clinical and Nutritional Laboratories clearly show that a scrubber-dryer has the necessary fluid extraction capability to remove more than 99% of bacterial soils. This compares with just 51% at best for a microfibre mop. The effectiveness of mopping dropped to

just 24% as bacteria were drawn back into previously cleaned areas- a self-defeating exercise in the end. In the same tests, the innovative and less expensive OmniFlex cleaning system matched the performance of the scrubber-dryer.


The final phase of our recommended cleaning process is to protect your surface with an antimicrobial defence with long-lasting properties. In the end, we will achieve greater success at keeping our environments truly clean, when we approach infection control logically and scientifically. Safety will improve when we remove soil and pathogen risk, rather than wash and spread them using conventional cleaning methods.

Automated floor cleaning does not have to be complicated or expensive. However, it must be reliably effective if healthcare staff are to stop the spread of infections. Don’t ‘disinfect and disperse’. Instead, ‘remove, improve, and protect’. In the age of COVID-19, we are compelled to learn from the past, and step into the future with new approaches and methodologies.
