People living with dementia often struggle to distinguish similar colours, so a typical washroom, featuring pale-coloured dispensers on pale-coloured walls, can quickly become disorientating. However, colour contrast can have a beneficial effect on their ability to recognise key pieces of equipment and to navigate the washroom environment.
The Dementia Care range is designed to apply this principle, using dispensers mounted onto high-contrast wall plates. In this way, the products make spaces less confusing and they support greater independence for the individual.
The range utilises contrasting colours of blue and white thus helping to distinguish the dispensers from their surroundings. Blue is also known to have a calming quality.
Support for designers
To aid washroom designers, Dudley Industries has also produced an accompanying range of signage, freely downloadable signs and handwashing guides, all adhering to the same principles.

Using such products enables ’guidance through colour‘. The same colour is used for all functional items - toilet roll housings, soap dispensers and towel- dispensers etc. – and provided that each is presented in a logical order, this can lead the user efficiently through the facilities. The journey can also be aided by colour-coding in accompanying signage or posters.
