TRAINING & EDUCATION

personal attributes, so whatever level you enter the profession, if you have a drive to succeed, you can work your way up regardless of your academic performance. Fundamentally though, a career in care has to stem from a desire to help others and to make a positive impact in this world.

What We Look For When it comes to recruitment, this is what we look for: somebody who cares. It sounds simplistic, but we want to see a person who is empathetic, someone who really wants to make an impact, and somebody who is outgoing and willing to put themselves out to help. We also look for people who are naturally curious, as I feel they make very good carers: people who can put themselves in other people’s shoes and not take everything at face value. For example, if a carer observes somebody has had a restless night and they are going to the toilet more, someone with a naturally enquiring mind may be more inclined to investigate whether there is an underlying issue, such as a UTI, rather than simply chalking it up as the person having a bad night.

To determine whether SweetTree applicants have these qualities, we invite potential candidates to take part in a group interview, to see how they respond to others around them. If someone is a caring person, no matter what they do or where they are – even if they’re not in a care setting – they will display certain characteristics when engaging with others. For example, we look for how people respond when others are talking. Very oſten, as well as listening to the person speaking, I’ll take time to look at the other people in the interview, to see how they are engaging, listening and responding. Ultimately, throughout the interview process, we are looking for those who are passionate about delivering first-class care.

Training Is Key A career in care offers a huge amount of flexibility. There’s also a tremendous ability to learn on the job and develop your career, because there’s such a focus on training within the care sector.

Raising Industry Standards Of course, providing excellent training and helping people develop their careers is just one of the ways in which we support our staff. Whilst this goes a long way towards a good record of staff retention, there are other factors at SweetTree that encourage loyalty from all our employees.

Firstly, we have SweetTree experts on hand 24/7 – for example, a dementia expert and an end-of-life expert, who our team can contact whenever they need support. Our staff are never leſt on their own to struggle, and if anybody needs advice, there’s always someone for them to speak to 365 days a year, 24 hours a day, at all levels. There’s almost nothing the organisation hasn’t experienced within our 15 years of care, so we are confident we will always be able to support and guide our employees, whatever the situation.

ourselves on, and we are committed to the career development of all our employees. People need to feel confident in the role they are doing. Aſter all, they are making a huge difference in somebody’s life and they are relied on for support, interaction and, above all, care. When an employee feels confident in what they are doing, high-quality care becomes second nature, which in turn frees up mental and emotional energy, enabling them to support people in less formal ways, for example, on a social level. When people aren’t offered the correct training on a continual basis, they can spend a lot of time feeling anxious or stressed in their job. At SweetTree, this is not the case – we know all our employees are highly capable and can carry out care with confidence.

Secondly, we always recognise our team members who go above and beyond for their client. We say thank you – and that’s really important when it comes to making employees feel appreciated.

Finally, we make sure everyone feels like they are part of the SweetTree family. We have lots of events throughout the year, to help people unwind and socialise with colleagues. We have a Christmas party, a summer barbecue, and we’ve just held our 15th anniversary party. All this helps our team come together, and really embrace and engage with the SweetTree vision.

At SweetTree, we are proud to be helping to raise standards of care within the industry. Of course, at the heart of this is our commitment to focusing on the client first and foremost, and making sure that all our carers have the skills, abilities, experience and personal qualities needed to deliver the highest quality of care.
