At the heart of the dry extraction process are the Host sponges – microscopic sponges that use a miniscule amount of water, detergent and cleaning agent to remain supple, absorbent, and abrasive. Applied liberally to carpet, the millions of sponges work their carefully applied solution directly into the fibres, breaking down and dissolving the oily bonds, and absorbing the soil and debris into the sponges. These sponges can then be easily removed through vacuuming, leaving the carpet clean and almost totally dry.
The Host machines, -the-Liberator-or-the-Freestyle-, can be used to work the sponges into the carpet, as their counter- rotating brushes make easy work of lifting the pile, allowing the sponges to attack soiling from every angle, before being safely vacuumed away. And because the surface isn’t left damp, it’s just as quick and easy to take a second pass at trouble spots, without the need to keep the area out of action.
While the Host system is no miracle cure for damage or long- term neglect, the dry extraction process can immediately breathe life into dulled carpet. On the small test patch I had to clean, the sponges worked their magic eliminating stains and enhancing the colour after just one application. Although there was a stain that required a little bit more attention, a small amount of Host spot removal solution was applied to ensure the stubborn mark was finally eradicated with the minimum of fuss.
56 | CARPET & UPHOLSTERY CARE
The Dry Extraction system removes the sticky soil residues and gets to the core of the problem, leaving dry soil with nothing to cling on to. While you may get an initial shock from using Host for the first time, as a carpet can be immediately made more vivid and restored to its original lustre, it’s through regular maintenance and cleaning that it has its best results: after all, once your carpet is in excellent condition, you should endeavour to keep it that way as long as possible.
Even though the Host system has been in use for many years, it has been tweaked to ensure it stays modern. Host’s Dry Extraction Carpet Cleaning System somehow manages to feel brand new and more powerful than many of the more complex, water-heavy solutions that require taking a carpet out of action for an extended period of time.
The quick and easy application, the great results and virtual elimination of downtime all add up to a cleaning solution that is convenient, easy to use and impressively effective. By removing troublesome sticky patches that attract and trap soils, maintaining the quality and appearance of a carpet is a doddle, meaning the life of the carpet can be extended and it can continue to impress for years to come.
