Seeing is believing

Tomorrow’s Cleaning Editor, Martin Wharmby, paid a visit to Host von Schrader UK, to see first-hand how and why their tried and tested cleaning system really works.

Usually, the press is only wheeled out at the launch of a new product, and stuffed full of finger food and alcohol in order to make a good first impression. It’s unusual to be invited along to see something that’s been around for quite a long time, so it was refreshing to receive an invite from Host von Schrader to come and try out their Dry Extraction Carpet Cleaning System at their Deeside HQ.

The Host system isn’t being rebranded or reinvented for a ‘new generation’: Managing Director Mike Egerton just wanted to show off how effective it really is, and why it’s never needed a revolution.

Carpets get dirty in two different ways: 85% of carpet soiling is dirt that’s been tracked in on the soles of shoes or dropped onto it, the remaining 15% is airborne. Roughly 90% of soiling is dry, while the remaining 10% is oily or sticky. What this means is that even an efficient vacuuming system cannot remove all soiling alone, as the sticky substances bind to the carpet fibres, attracting and retaining much of the dry soil. A chemical and mechanical action is needed to loosen the bonds so it can be removed.

With normal vacuuming, there isn’t enough penetration through the surface to remove deep deposits of soil, let alone the sticky, oily mixture that works into the fibres, and over time this leads to damage and discolouration. As an example, Mike had prepared some carpet – complete with various stains – for me to test Host’s effectiveness out on. After a quick demonstration, I set about eliminating the caked-in dirt.
