Recognising success, rewarding excellence

Environment Media Group, organiser of the European Cleaning & Hygiene Awards, highlights the importance of recognition for the cleaning industry.

There are so many misconceptions about the cleaning and hygiene sector and all too often brilliant, innovative businesses and organisations don’t get the credit they deserve. Many people outside the industry view it as short- termist, low paying and low skilled. They don’t realise the skill and training required to work professionally in cleaning and hygiene, nor do they see the innovative products and methods used in an ever-evolving industry.

Despite the sector often having a poor reputation, it actually contributes a great deal to society, from employing millions of people across Europe to driving up standards for employee policy, sustainability and innovation. However, until recently there hasn’t been a pan-European awards programme to recognise and reward such achievements.

The European Cleaning and Hygiene Awards celebrate excellence in the professional cleaning and hygiene markets across Europe and highlight the contribution the sector makes to everyday life. Not only do the awards give well- deserved recognition to the individuals and organisations that are leading the way, but they also help to encourage entrepreneurialism and innovation.

With few barriers preventing people from working in cleaning and hygiene, the industry is open and available for new entrants. With a growing number of companies and job opportunities, competition for business is stiff. While this can be challenging for many, it also brings opportunity by providing the platform to improve standards and innovation as people look for a way to stand out against the crowd and overshadow their competitors.

The Awards shine the spotlight on the companies that are going the extra mile to remain competitive. Whether they are driving product innovation, leading sustainability best-practice, or championing workplace development and training, the awards ensure that companies, and their staff, feel valued for their hard work.

With entries now closed, the shortlist will soon be announced. Even if you are not a finalist, or did not enter this year, the award ceremony and gala dinner offer an unrivalled opportunity for networking with people you may never otherwise come into contact with.

Commitment to training

Taking place in Berlin this November, the European Cleaning & Hygiene Awards recognise and celebrate advancements in professional cleaning. The Commitment to and Investment in Training Award recognises employee training that goes beyond the basic skills needed to do the job, enabling staff to develop personally, expand their knowledge, progress within their environment and, in turn, enhance their service offering.

Last year’s winner of this award, Julius Rutherfoord & Co, understands the importance of training for the safety and security of its staff and clients, and its scheme goes above and beyond what is necessary to simply ‘do the job’. The Julius Rutherfoord & Co training programme covers a wide range of areas, including induction and health and safety training, motivation and communication skills, and site-specific training including client culture workshops. Employees also have the opportunity to complete apprenticeships, which alongside role-specific abilities, also teach functional skills such as Maths and English.

The 2018 awards will once again be recognising the importance of training in the professional cleaning industry. With over 100 entries this year, we’re looking forward to revealing the finalists in all 11 categories.

The shortlist will be revealed in September and the winners will be announced at a gala dinner at the 5-star Hotel Palace, Berlin, on Thursday 15 November 2018.
