GETTING YOUR MONEY’S WORTH


Pilgrim Payne, specialists in soft furnishing care for more than 165 years, demonstrate that when it comes to carpet cleaning and


upholstery care, value for money doesn’t always mean good value in the long run.


When it comes to looking after textiles like carpets and upholstery, there are a great many factors that need to be taken into account. From the fibre content to the construction method, the types of dyes used to colour and the type of production finish employed, to name but a few. Therefore, in order to look after soft furnishings and extend their lives it is essential to employ a company that has the depth and breadth of knowledge and experience to know what is required for safe and high quality results.


It is true to say that most of the synthetic floor coverings and carpet tiles that exist in many offices and buildings are easily cleanable, and there is little risk in cleaning them. They do not necessarily have to be cleaned by the supplier and can be safely cleaned by others. This means that many carpet cleaning companies can offer this service. However, once one moves beyond these basic floor coverings and there are inclusions of wool, silk, viscose etc. in the pile, then a specialist is needed to care for such valuable soft furnishings. Apart from the obvious risks of using non-specialist textile cleaners, there is also the consideration of value for money. Cleaning of carpets and upholstery can have many and varied outcomes. An example of this was where Pilgrim Payne had completed a successful re-installation of elaborate curtains and pelmetting in a prestigious Government building. While signing off the work with the site manager a question was raised asking for the opportunity to quote for cleaning the carpet, as it looked dirty. The site manager explained that the carpets had been cleaned the day before. This surprised us because the carpet looked soiled.


What happened next was not an isolated incident. A handkerchief was moistened with water and then rubbed over a small area of the carpet. It was shown to the site manager - it was now a dirty, dark grey. The carpet was still loaded with soil and dirt. The site manager was amazed and embarrassed that he had commissioned the company who had ‘cleaned’ the carpet. Pilgrim Payne arranged to carry out a free


trial re-clean of an area that had been ‘cleaned’. The difference was remarkable. The previous cleaner was offering low prices per clean but the client was getting nothing for that low price. The cleaner visited four times per year, charging each time. When it was pointed out that two more expensive but thorough cleans cost less per annum than the four cleaning failures, any financial savings vanished. It would also give the client clean carpets.


Cleaning is about finished results and levels of cleanliness, but it is also about value for money. As the example above illustrates, seemingly lower prices often deliver poorer results and quite often cost more in the long run. A carpet’s useful life and visual appearance is reduced and expensive replacements are necessary.


Always inspect and check finished results to make sure that carpets and upholstery have been thoroughly cleaned. Always choose a trusted, long established, specialist company to care for valuable carpets and upholstery. Look for a long history of success and creditable endorsements of a company’s standing.
