WHY THE NEW ERP
REGULATIONS ARE MORE THAN JUST HOT AIR
Phillip Jones, head of marketing at Hoover SDA, discusses the impact of the forthcoming EU regulations and how manufacturers have been preparing for the change.
When the European Union adopted the Kyoto protocol in 1992, it committed itself to reduction of CO2 emissions by at least 20% by 2020.
In order to meet this target, the EU created what is now known as the Energy Related Products (ERP) directive. This affects all aspects of everyday life, from the use of energy saving bulbs, energy efficiency labelling on domestic appliances and everything in between.
The new regulations will affect many areas of energy-related products but our biggest considerations will be the change to vacuum design limits, durability requirements and energy efficiency.
As of September 2017, all corded vacuums, such as canisters, sticks and uprights, will be produced in-line with these new regulations, as will dry tanks and dry vacuum cleaners with water filtration.
The new ERP directive states that all new products manufactured must be under 900W and have a sound output of less than 80dBA. Appliances need to be more durable with a minimum of 500 hours motor life, as well as 40.000 hose bending operations. New grades have also been added to the energy, performance and dust re- emission classes.
In line with the new regulations, the layout of the energy label has also changed. The lowest three classes (E, F and G) have been removed and three new ones have been introduced (A+++, A++ and A+) showing the initiative’s commitment to creating the most efficient products.
How will ERP 2017
affect consumers? In terms of energy efficiency, the directive is thought to have an energy- saving equivalent to 175m tonnes oil, which is equal to the energy consumption of Italy. In the long term these changes will have hugely positive impact environmentally.

The impact on individual consumers may not be significant, but it will make a notable difference to the nation’s energy consumption. For example, upgrading from a D to an A+ rated vacuum would use 50% less energy per hour, which would have a significant impact if replicated across the nation.
The changing energy labels are also being used to educate the general public about energy efficiency and encourage comparisons between products so they can make an informed choice. Although the ratings have changed the layout has remained the same, using the traditional traffic light system that British consumers are used to seeing every day on their food items.

There are certain aspects of the directive that will specifically impact the user in their home. For example, the sound allowance decreasing to a maximum of 80dBA means there will be less disturbance. The increased motor life means the appliance will last longer and the improved hose bending will make life easier for the user.
What’s already on the market? To know that all manufacturers have been set these new ultra-efficient goals truly does demonstrate a commitment to creating the most efficient products and we’re glad to say that Hoover is leading the charge with a number of A++ and A+ products already on the market.
Since the regulations were mooted we’ve invested heavily into research and development to make sure that our products not only meet, but exceed the new standards set out by the directive. Whilst this is a hugely important move for the reduction of carbon emissions, we wanted to ensure that meeting the ERP standards didn’t mean compromising on the quality that our consumers have come to expect.
We feel like we’ve achieved this, with many of our ERP compliant products across both the upright and cylinder ranges ticking the boxes for energy efficiency and functionality. By September this year all products will be produced in line with the regulations so we are continuing to look at ways of raising the bar with our product portfolio.
These ERP regulations will have a huge impact globally and will continue to encourage manufacturers to strive for the creation of the most innovative and energy-efficient products.
