SUCCESS ISN’T JUST ABOUT APPS Tech magnets and dot.com millionaires may seem glamorous, but not everyone can have the next ‘big idea’ and the boom and bust economic model is particularly prevalent in the online arena. In contrast cleaning is an essential industry that isn’t going away, and is ripe with opportunities. It brings hygiene, health and safety, and perception benefits to businesses: no-one can hope to be successful in the long term if their premises aren’t kept clean and smart.

Entrepreneurs in the cleaning industry aren’t necessarily looking for the next big thing, but they are looking to do the existing thing better. And countless people have made very successful careers in the industry doing so. Many millionaires start off owning small companies that provide straightforward services effectively and the cleaning industry is a prime example of how this works.

BEEN THERE, DONE THAT When people hear about Livery Companies they usually think of the traditional element – the robes and ceremonies – but, I’m going to be a bit controversial here: that was of no interest to me when I first became a member of the Environmental Cleaners. For me it was all about mixing with other successful people in the industry and hearing the stories of those who have ‘been there, done that’. With some success already under my belt, I wanted to be part of that club.

INSPIRATION, EXPERIENCE AND

SUCCESS BREEDS SUCCESS

The idea that ‘success breeds success’ might

be a cliché, but it had a basis in truth. It installs confidence and if you expect good things then good things are more likely to come your way.

Darren Marston, Senior Warden at the Worshipful Company of Environmental Cleaners, certainly thinks mixing with the best in the industry has many advantages.

All too often you’ll hear about people ‘falling into’ the cleaning industry or ending up in it almost by accident. It is all too rarely a career of choice, due to poor perceptions of the industry. However, I think people who don’t consider cleaning a worthy career are missing out and those who see it as a dead-end job are missing the point.

ENTHUSIASM As a member of the Environmental Cleaners, I have access to a network of inspiration, experience and enthusiasm about the cleaning industry that is unrivalled in any other forum. The wide range of activities on offer also makes it easier to mix with people in different ways and build genuine friendships, not just business networks. Whether sitting down to dinner, striding across the fairways or attending the Lord Mayor’s Show, you meet and engage with people who are driven, dedicated and share a common cause – even when they’re from competing businesses.

Attending events surrounded by other people who have made a success of their chosen industry career fills me with pride. Those robes and traditions I initially discounted, I now see as what they are. They are badges of honour that show our commitment and loyalty to our industry. We are part of a long tradition of success in the industry and are building on the achievements of those who come before us and it is right that we recognise and celebrate that through the traditions of the Livery Companies.

GIVE SOMETHING BACK Being a member of the Environmental Cleaners is also an opportunity to give something back – to help those who are nearer the start of their career and to share our success through charity work, helping those who are less fortunate.

If you want to share success in the cleaning industry, there’s no better place to be. Why not come along and find out?
