CHEMICALS

In the battle to be more sustainable, Selden Research believe they have come up with the first return, refill, reuse, closed loop solution in the cleaning sector.
Plastic pollution on land and in marine environments is a global issue. Whether deliberate or accidental, plastics end up polluting our streets as well as oceans, seas, lakes and waterways as a result of inadequate waste management or simply undesirable human behaviour. The harmful effects of uncontrolled plastic waste have multiple environmental, economic and social consequences.
Recycling and landfill
Worldwide, 32% of plastics escape recycling and collection systems, according to a report by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation. Across all sectors, including both retail and B2B, the UK recycling rate was estimated at 51% in 2018, and of all the collected plastic fit for recycling in the UK, just 35% of it is actually recycled in the UK. The balance is exported for processing.
Plastic takes over 400 years to degrade, while recycled plastic containers take even longer than virgin because the production process sees it blown at heavier weights. Very, very low levels of plastic cleaning chemical bottle recycling end up taking place, and with so much going to landfill, it’s clear the impact that our industry has on the environment can’t be cancelled out just by following recycling procedures.
If our industry is to make a difference, then we need a truly sustainable solution.
The Selden Environmental Pledge
Selden Research is absolutely dedicated to reducing the net amount of plastic produced, consumed and sent to waste. Selden is committed to reducing the amount of energy that we use and to using renewable energy whenever and wherever we can. Every year we will enable our customers in aggregate to clean more surfaces, fabric, etc, while using less plastic packaging overall.
Selden’s products are formulated to be ‘performance first’: concentrates use less resources, less packaging, less energy, and have lower CO2 emissions than entry level- priced ‘splash’ products. They’re packaged using a smaller amount of plastic, surrounded by the minimum amount of cardboard to complete any given task.
What is the Solution?
‘Return, Refill, Reuse’ is the gold standard when it comes to sustainability, and Selden’s innovative closed loop packaging, ‘The Solution’, leads the way in best practice.
The Solution system eliminates waste in the supply chain, and consists of a self-stacking container, a custom- designed cap with integral valve, and a fully recyclable tamper-evident seal.
Ecoflower
The EU Ecolabel is an environmental excellence label awarded to products and services meeting high environmental standards throughout their lifecycle: from raw material extraction to production, distribution and disposal. It promotes the circular economy by encouraging producers to generate less waste and CO2 during the manufacturing process.
Selden hold more Ecoflower licences than any other UK business in the away-from-home cleaning sector. This is testament to our continued commitment to best practice and determination to produce products with the best environment profile possible. Ecoflower-licensed products are part of the Solution’s product range.

Together, these form the returnable and refillable pack at the core of The Solution. There’s no wasteful throwing away of single-use cleaning chemical bottles, no relying on recycling systems ultimately outside of your control, and importantly there’s no manual refilling.
The Solution system dispenser consists of a wire basket to screw to a wall or on a shelf, a connector cap that couples to the container cap, and a tube from the connector cap to a modified pelican pump. This pump is housed in a pistol grip which makes it easy to hold, which locates into a custom designed holder which restricts the stroke of the pump, regulating the dose of the chemical typically delivered into a trigger spray bottle. The pelican pump assembly itself is designed to pull out of its holder so it can be used to dispense chemical into a bucket, etc.
The Solution system needs the connector cap to function, but the cap does not need to be connected to the pelican pump: it’s designed to couple to dosing systems like dishwashing pumps, venturi pumps, pressure washers etc. Connection conversion kits are also available.
