Avoiding disappointment
When it comes to washrooms, high traffic doesn’t have to mean high consumer disappointment, says Trudi Osborne, Marketing Manager at Airdri.
Cleanliness
As one of the most frequented areas of a public outlet, the washroom needs to have a robust cleaning rota in place. Regular checks should be carried out to ensure the environment is clean, hygienic and well stocked at all times. Of course, this level of maintenance requires manpower but there are now products available to help in the battle against bacteria.
Recently, we added the Airdri Air Purifier to our portfolio to address concerns around washroom cleanliness. The unit uses custom thermal convection technology to kill airborne and surface bacteria and viruses, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Other solutions, which may feature a HEPA filter or have an antibacterial coating, only clean the area immediately surrounding the dryer. The Airdri Air Purifier provides a complete hygiene solution for the whole washroom.
Durability
When it comes to hand drying, the solution needs to be able to stand up to constant use. Paper towels can be a costly and ineffective choice in high traffic areas. Not only do they need constant replenishment, they also make the washroom an untidy place when misused, and can cause maintenance issues if thrown down the toilet.
The shopping centre washroom, or any high traffic washroom for that matter, plays an important role in customer perception. Having clean, hygienic and functional facilities can make or break a public outlet. Let’s face it: if you go somewhere and the washroom is untidy and in poor working condition, it leaves you with a negative impression of the overall operation.
There’s nothing worse than queuing up for the loo and seeing paper towels strewn all over the floor, or an out of order sign on the soap dispensers or hand dryers. It gives the impression that the staff are too busy to service it properly, or worse: simply don’t care. To the customer, unpleasant washroom experiences are an inconvenience, and who wants tarnishing with that kind of reputation?
When it comes to busy public environments, like retail centres or sports stadiums, the condition and ease of use of the washroom should be a key consideration. Customers want seamless experiences, with clean facilities that don’t let them down.
It can be a challenge to keep on top of high traffic areas, with regular cleans and replenishments required, but there are ways to ensure your washroom is welcoming and fit for purpose. And it all comes down to the facilities you procure. When equipping a busy public washroom, put cleanliness, durability and efficiency at the forefront of your purchasing decisions.

An out of order hand dryer is equally useless. Longevity is fundamental – you need a highly reliable product that will last, as well as deliver an effective service. We are renowned for making some of the most reliable and durable hand dryers on the market, thanks to our bespoke motor brushes. By using the latest motor technology, our hand dryers on average have a lifespan of around 6,000 hours – six times longer than that of similar, fast dry models.
In fact, when placed on lifecycle testing, the Airdri Quantum jet dryer can last for over 10,000 hours, outperforming popular, competitor models by tenfold.
Efficiency
Durability doesn’t have to replace the efficiency or performance of a product. Investing in a hand dryer that will go the distance, as well as keep energy running costs to a minimum, is key. Go for a hand dryer that consumes very little power – under 1,000 watts – which is the standard required in order to qualify for the coveted GreenSpec status.
Two of our high-performance jet dryers that have achieved this accreditation are the Airdri Quazar and the Airdri Quantum. In fact, the Quantum is the lowest energy consumption unit in the world.
