Officers on the outskirts of Portland, Oregon in the USA, were recently called to a suburban household amid reports of a potential burglar, only to discover a much smaller threat than expected.

Washington County officers were called in by a man staying at his nephew’s house, who had heard noises and the closing of a bathroom door followed by more rustling and sounds.

Police arrived and surrounded the house and a canine unit was called in. Inside the house, officers called out to the ‘suspect’ demanding they surrender themselves immediately.

Eventually armed officers breached the bathroom only to be confronted by the owners’ robotic vacuum cleaner, which had become trapped in the room and was noisily repeating its rounds.

The incident was captured on a Washington County officer’s body camera, capturing a tense moment that quickly turns to farce.

As in-home robots become more prevalent, this ‘home invasion’ is likely to be just one of many such incidents of small robotic cleaning devices getting into trouble and causing panic.

Churchill wins Millennium contract

Millennium Point in Birmingham City Centre has awarded Churchill Services a three-year cleaning contract.

The agreement, which is worth £170,000 per annum, will cover general cleaning across the site, as well as window and washroom maintenance.

Millennium Point is a unique venue destination in Birmingham City Centre and an iconic landmark. It is home to Thinktank, Birmingham’s science museum, and Birmingham City University. Owned by Millennium Point Charitable Trust, the building also holds a 350-seat auditorium, flexible workspaces, meeting rooms and offices. It was opened in 2001 to help promote STEM projects, organisations and initiatives across the West Midlands area.

Ashley Hales, Facilities Manager at Millennium point, commented: “We were impressed with Churchill’s cleaning technology, management structure and approach to contract delivery throughout the bid process. The Millennium Point team is excited to work alongside its new service partner to help deliver a clean and positive environment for all building users.”
