News Sponsored by Garfield keeps washing up on French

coastline For more than three decades, the Iroise coast of Brittany, France, has been polluted by the most unlikely of sources: cartoon characterGarfield.

Novelty 1980’s phones depicting the lasagne-loving, Mondays-hating feline have been periodically washing up on beaches in the region for years, but finally the source of the unusual pollutant has been discovered: a long-lost shipping container, wedged in a secluded sea cave that’s only accessible during low tides.

Go-Ahead given for Cordant’s sustainability

Cordant Cleaning has been recognised by Go-Ahead Group after receiving a Sustainable Supplier Award from the leading transport operator.

Cordant, which became a Social Business in 2017, earned praise for its exceptionally structured staff initiatives that concentrate on creating rewarding roles offering personal growth and mentorship.

The Awards build on Go-Ahead’s commitment to sustainability within its supply chain and come after the business launched an industry-first sustainable procurement charter in the UK. Cordant Group has provided bus cleaning, shunting and refuelling services for Go-Ahead since 2001, and the two organisations continue to work in collaboration to ensure a sustainable transport service at every level.

certification Commercial contract cleaning provider Ecocleen has successfully achieved ISO 27001 certification, in recognition of its best practice information security standards.

This latest accreditation demonstrates that the company has implemented internationally-recognised standards across the business to ensure customers, staff and associates benefit from the highest level of data protection.

Ecocleen underwent detailed testing and assessment by an independent auditor to validate it complied with the requirements of the accreditation. The company will also complete an annual review and a three-year re-certification process to provide complete peace of mind that all data is continuously protected in line with the ISO 27001 standards and approved methodologies. campaign using the face of Jim Davis’ lazy orange cat as a symbol of plastic pollution, jogging the memory of local farmer René Morvan. Recalling first finding the unusual debris in the early 80’s, he brought the Ar Vilantsou group and France Info journalists to the cave, which is difficult to access.

The wrecked shipping container remains buried underneath rocks and inaccessible. With an indeterminate amount of Garfield phones doomed to continue their slow, infrequent escapes into the sea during tidal shifts, the plastic phones won’t decompose within a human lifetime, so they could haunt France for many decades to come – but at least the source of the unlikely pollution has been discovered.

Guy Pakenham, Cordant Cleaning Managing Director, said: “The Cordant Group has been committed to developing supply chain practices that go above expected standards – to blend the sustainable needs of the environment with those of our people. Receiving this recognition from Go-Ahead is an honour; we are committed to continually improving supply chain practices and are thankful to work with a business that shares these priorities.”

Go-Ahead’s interim Chief Financial Officer, Elodie Brian, added: “Go-Ahead and Cordant have been partners for more than a decade, building a strong relationship based on mutual values of delivering for the community. Aligning our own sustainable goals with the companies throughout our supply chain enables us to lead the industry in holistic sustainable action.”

information, intellectual property, employee details, and third-party information.
