A ‘Shore’ fire sustainable future

Paul Mulready, Marketing Manager of Northwood Hygiene Products Ltd, highlights the contribution that the company’s North Shore premium proprietary washroom dispenser and consumables system can make to our sustainability.

According to recent analysis by Carbon Brief, the UK’s 2020 greenhouse gas emissions were 51% lower than 1990 levels, meaning the UK is halfway to meeting its ‘net zero’ emissions target by 2050.

Sustainability dominates both the political agenda and news headlines, with consumers more environmentally- conscious than ever before. With such widespread interest in sustainability, it must stay at the forefront of our sector, driving manufacturers to develop innovative solutions and deliver strong environmental credentials.

At Northwood, we’re proud to make a contribution to sustainability by developing products that help eliminate waste and over-use. Our North Shore range is now well established across a diverse range of European washrooms, including large office blocks, educational establishments, manufacturing plants, front of house locations and healthcare establishments. It uses leading-edge dispenser technology to create a comprehensive and hygienic system that’s high capacity, cost-effective, durable and, crucially, environmentally sustainable.

The issue of limiting the misuse and waste of hygiene products is one Northwood is passionate about. We spent a great deal of time researching and developing North Shore, which offers a quality dispenser range boasting a secure locking system to prevent theft, and a unique dispensing system that deters overuse by ensuring towels are released in economic lengths for controlled dispensing.

Unfortunately, misuse and waste can take on many forms, beyond excess toilet paper and paper towel usage. System damage and anti-social behaviour can also yield high maintenance and environmental costs if the system within the washroom isn’t manufactured to a high standard.

Our entire North Shore range is constructed from extremely durable acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) plastic, minimising any damage that may be caused.

All North Shore paper and soap products are manufactured in the UK, minimising the carbon footprint of the product. 57% of the North Shore paper range is made from 100% recycled material and these products carry the Forest

Stewardship Council (FSC) certification. Furthermore, more than 75% of Northwood's volume comes from products made from recycled paper.

The mainstay of the North Shore brand is our signature four roll dispenser – the Orbit. Designed exclusively by Northwood, it fits seamlessly within any washroom environment and boasts a capacity of up to 5000 sheets of toilet paper, demonstrating huge cost-in-use benefits. The system is low maintenance, requiring less frequent replenishment, making it better for the environment too.

There’s also our compact, infinity paper Side-by-Side toilet roll dispenser, high-capacity Mechanical Hands-Free roll towel dispenser, a no-touch ultra-hygienic Hybrid roll towel system, a Micro Folded hand towel dispenser and a soap dispenser to provide establishments with a full end-to-end washroom solution.

North Shore systems deliver zero waste. Both the Orbit and the Side-by-Side toilet tissue dispensers prevent access to the next roll for the user until the first is fully used, whilst the Mechanical Hands-Free towel dispenser allows for stub roll transfer. The North Shore washroom system also stops over- use and pilferage – both toilet tissue dispensers don’t free roll and all hand towels are dispensed as flat sheets, optimising hand drying and therefore reducing need. All dispensers are also lockable to prevent theft and vandalism. Delivering no waste and minimising overuse lowers North Shore’s carbon footprint and contributes to a sustainable future.

North Shore aims to be a green, sustainable product. All packaging including cardboard cores, cardboard cartons and paper and plastic wraps are fully recyclable. Plastic inserts are made from recycled bottle tops and are recyclable, soap cartridges are also made from recycled plastic and are recyclable, and even the dispensers are recyclable at the end of their lives.

As an ethical business, we want to improve sustainability and leave a greener global footprint. We will continue improving our products, processes and packaging, and look for more sustainable ways of working as a business.
