SUSTAINABLY SMART In an age where reputable cleaning and janitorial companies are now expected to make

sustainable choices, Jangro CEO Joanne Gilliard offers some smart steps to help minimise your organisation’s environmental impact.

The cleaning industry has never been more ‘green’. By and large, the days of expensive pre-diluted, ready- to-use cleaning spray bottles have gone, and with them huge volumes of waste packaging and the high carbon footprint resulting from all the fuel and transportation required.

However, the day-to-day operations and many of the products used in our industry inevitably do have an impact on our environment. In line with the government’s 25-year environmental plan, which was unveiled earlier this year, it has never been more important to reduce the potentially harmful effects wherever and whenever possible – without, of course, compromising on performance or the bottom line.

A significant challenge faced by cleaning businesses is the reduction of plastic waste, cited as ‘one of the great environmental scourges of our time’ by the Prime Minister, forming a key element of her environmental plan. Our industry relies on products safely housed in plastic containers, like toilet cleaner bottles, disinfectant,

floor cleaning fluids – so how can this be reduced?

GET SMART Thankfully, there are a plethora of non-plastic or less-plastic alternatives on the market. One recent innovation is the use of soluble cleaning sachets instead of plastic bottles. Cleaning sachets used together with buckets or refillable bottles can make a huge difference to the number of plastic bottles used and disposed of per year, and controlled dosing is one of the many other benefits to this.

Each sachet contains the correct amount of product required, meaning there is no waste or over-use, which ultimately saves the user money. Less packaging is required, which leads to lower transport costs and fewer emissions – as well as taking up less space in storage. Finally, they are incredibly easy to use. Just add the sachet to water, mix, and voila: you have a ready to use cleaner. Jangro offers a full range of sachet cleaning products, as part of our Enviro Concentrates range, which has been

especially manufactured with the environment in mind.

WISING UP TO WEIR When choosing cleaning supplies, look for eco-friendly products, especially those that have the Wright Environmental Impact Rating (WEIR) stamp. This system considers environmental issues during the selection process of raw materials, the manufacturing process, packaging and hazard classification of a product. This means that as well as considering cleaning products containing less harmful chemicals, the system looks at the entire lifecycle and overall carbon footprint, and you can be sure you are purchasing the most sustainable product available.

Jangro’s Enviro Concentrates range is a good example of how we use the WEIR system to rate the sustainability of all our products. It allows us to compare many different variables, and ask whether there is another, more sustainable alternative to a product that we should be considering.

RECYCLE Last but by no means least: recycling. One of the simplest and most effective changes a business can make is to focus on improving its recycling rate, and reducing its landfill burden. A reputable janitorial and cleaning supplier can help – offering everything required to get the right systems in place, enabling efficient, cost-effective sorting at the point of disposal.

Sustainability will continue to be important in the future; and as awareness grows so too will the demands on reputable companies to make these sustainable choices. By making these smart and simple changes, you can reduce your company’s environmental impact quite considerably. Not only that, the positive impact of making the switch to these products is good for business, as it can often save money.
