trade. Providing people with a guarantee of a pleasant, clean and hygienic toilet experience complete with hand washing facilities and a whole raft of luxurious extras, these companies are reacting (and profiting) to a growing demand for premier washrooms. Not satisfied with dire facilities and intolerant to outdated standards, this increased demand for a holistic, high-quality washroom experience is resonating throughout the industry sectors and impacting on the expectation of washroom facilities as a whole.

When organisational pressure to reduce costs is high, cutting spend in the washroom is a temptation. However, thanks to emerging innovation in washroom maintenance, the job of looking after the needs of users and keeping the facility clean and tidy within budget is perfectly possible. Efficiency, sustainability, automation and waste minimisation are key factors to the new washroom systems that buildings are starting to include in their renovations.

REDUCING COST-IN-USE In a time when washrooms matter not only in terms of cleanliness but also energy efficiency, businesses need to be aware of the potential mistakes they can make when designing and cleaning their washrooms. Considering a washroom as a cost, rather than an investment is the first. Looking for the cheapest consumables like soap, toilet rolls, and other low priority purchases, is not the way to make long-term savings. When facilities managers are sourcing and purchasing products, it is important to remember that ‘cost’ and ‘cost-in-use’ are two entirely different things. Reducing consumption and maintenance will reduce the running costs of a facility, so ‘invest now to save later’ is most certainly the message here.

Reviewing current products, equipment, methods and upgrading them to the more effective alternatives designed to increase financial and labour savings, is something that will generate tangible ROI. Ensuring lower product consumption through the installation of smarter dispensing techniques will not only prove more effective, but will also reduce the amount of waste to landfill,

packaging and deliveries required which will bring sustainability benefits as well as cost benefits.

UPGRADING

YOUR WASHROOM Organisations need not be daunted by the prospect of upgrading washrooms to achieve a higher standard of washroom environment. In many cases, tweaking existing amenities through upgrading key components will enable a business to make savings without affecting washroom standards or completely obliterating a budget.

“Efficiency, sustainability, automation and waste minimisation are key factors to the new

washroom systems that buildings are starting to include in their renovations.”

Replacing traditional, folded towel dispensers for roll-based dispensers is a good example. Often improperly loaded or overstuffed, the volume of towels mistakenly taken from this type of dispenser is vast, creating unnecessary waste in both resource and spends. Switch this for a touchless roll-dispenser that issues product automatically or a one sheet dispenser, and immediately supply costs are reduced. The same holds true for tissue dispensers. Large capacity dispensers will reduce labour requirements by requiring less frequent restocking of the dispensers.

As well as more intelligent ways to dispense paper towels, the installation of twin-roll toilet paper dispensers are a further recommendation for businesses looking to provide good facilities but within budget. Double dispensers, although initially more expensive to purchase than the single roll alternative, provide savings throughout its lifetime, as replacement toilet paper is required only when it fully runs out. Since there is still another fresh roll of toilet paper to ensure

sufficient supply, replacement of toilet paper is not needed even when the quantity of the first roll is low, which helps to prevent toilet paper wastage.

LEAN AND GREEN Keeping a washroom tidy for its users is also an issue that has received much more thought in the last few years. Decreasing the use of paper, as well as the mess and wastage often associated with it, is at the top of many facilities mangers priority lists.

The way that washrooms are cleaned is also changing, helping cleaning providers to deliver a compliant clean in less time and with fewer materials. A perfect example is with the emergence of microfibre as a material for cleaning tools. Conserving water and minimising the spread of contamination through clever design, microfibre mops are fast overtaking their traditional alternatives. Decreasing cleaning time, cleaning tools produced with microfibre are also minimising the risk of slips and falls in the washroom due to the reduction in water usage and drying time.

It’s always tempting to continue with the washroom system that you already have in place, especially if there have been no consistent complaints from your customers. However, it is also important to stay ahead of the curve and constantly be looking for potential cost savings with new innovative systems that come to market. Of course, you don’t have to do this yourself. Ensure you have a trustworthy washroom supplier who will tell you about these cost-in- use savings so that you don’t have to spend your time looking for them. This is part of the reason why we have developed our Ask Arrow programme. Many of our customers did not have time to look for the savings available to them, so we wanted to do it for them, saving both time and money throughout their facility and operation.

Washroom cleanliness is becoming increasingly important throughout the UK and with consumer standards rising, it is more important than ever to take a good look at your washroom and make some improvements.
