ISSA RECOGNISED WITH SMARTWAY AFFILIATE CHALLENGE AWARD

Worldwide cleaning industry association ISSA has announced that it has been recognised by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as a 2017 SmartWay Affiliate Challenge Honouree, as part of the EPA’s Earth Day celebrations.

The SmartWay Affiliate Challenge is a national program developed by the EPA to acknowledge organisations that do an exceptional job of supporting policies and advancing practices that reduce harmful pollution from freight activities.

ISSA is one of nine US organisations to receive the honour, and the only cleaning industry association to do so. The win was spurred on through ISSA’s collaboration with Sustainability Dashboard Tools, LLC, and the new Distributor Efficiency Analytics & Learning (DEAL) program that resulted from it. SmartWay tools and strategies are critical elements of the DEAL program to help specifically with fleet operations.

John Barrett, ISSA Executive Director, said: “We’re honoured by this recognition. The mission of ISSA aligns directly with that of the SmartWay program. We’re committed to increasing the appreciation for cleaning as an investment in human health, the environment, and an improved bottom line. This program helps those in our industry reduce their carbon footprint, and also enables our members to save money and be more efficient with their shipping operations.”

As a SmartWay Affiliate Challenge Honouree, ISSA and Sustainability Dashboard Tools, LLC, completed key activities in a variety of areas, including:

• Recommended SmartWay tools and strategies to members (small- to medium-sized cleaning product distributors) to save money improving fleet operating efficiency and reducing the associated costs.

• Incorporated SmartWay strategies as a core component for an educational best practice series targeted to improving fleet efficiency.

• Worked with members and effective third-party avenues to better understand the process for collecting data for the SmartWay Truck Carrier Emissions Tracking Tool.

Christopher Grundler, Director of the EPA’s Office of Transportation and Air Quality, said: “EPA commends the SmartWay Affiliate Challenge honourees for their extraordinary level of commitment and enthusiasm in supporting more efficient and sustainable business practices in moving goods. These organisations represent diverse industry sectors and stakeholders who are showing that American prosperity and protecting the environment can go hand in hand.”

ISSA and others were recognised during a public ceremony on 15th May 2017, at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center in Oxon Hill, MD.

AVMOR HELPS THOUSANDS IMPACTED BY CANADA FLOODS

Avmor, a leading producer of professional cleaning solutions, has donated cases of sanitisers, deodorisers, and other cleaning chemicals to assist homeowners and building owners affected by a “catastrophic flood” in Canada, affecting cities including Quebec and Ontario.

During the first week of May, a month’s worth of rain fell on this part of Southern Canada causing major flooding to around 170 different municipalities, with ten Canadian cities declaring a state of emergency. It’s estimated that more than 5,000 households were affected and more than 2,000 people asked to exit their homes.

However, the rains have now stopped and water for the first time is beginning to recede.

Lai-Na Wong, Marketing Manager for Avmor, said: “We decided this week that now is the time to help those most impacted by the floods. Along with sanitisers and deodorisers, we are helping home and building owners with cleaning solutions that can help eliminate mould and fungus.”

In some cases, to get these supplies to household and building owners Wong said volunteers, working with 2,250 members of the Canadian Armed Forces, needed to make ‘man-made’ bridges, passing cases of cleaning solutions and supplies from one person to another over flooded fields.

Lai-Na added: “Avmor is not the only company helping out. It’s at times like this that we discover lots of organisations and individuals stepping up to the plate to help their neighbours.”

So far, it is believed that the floods have caused only one death. Now, the big concern is the economic impact the tragedy may have had.
