Does your washroommake the grade?

With schools and educational facilities closed for summer, maintenance teams have the optimum window to prepare their buildings for students returning for the new academic year in September. Paul Mulready, Marketing Manager at Northwood Hygiene Products, talks about what washroom systems should deliver to the education sector.

Hygiene has always been of paramount importance in educational settings. With youngsters in close proximity while learning, a classroom is the perfect breeding ground for germs, making them the ideal places for viruses and bacteria to spread.

It’s therefore vital to ensure that washrooms are clean, hygienic, and efficiently run spaces that students want to use – so what should washroom providers consider when choosing their solution?

Learning curve

After so many interruptions to their education because of the pandemic, students need consistent learning, meaning washrooms must deliver optimal hygiene on every level.

With students encouraged to visit washrooms more frequently to wash their hands regularly, supplies of soap and towels will naturally deplete faster, requiring more frequent replenishment. Furthermore, empty soap and paper dispensers discourage youngsters from good hygiene practices and lengthens their time in the restroom, which is why using the right products is so essential.

Specifiers should therefore look for high-capacity dispensers that feature clear inspection windows, to make them quick and easy to refill and reduce maintenance time in the washroom.

In an educational setting, the units must be durable as well as functional, so providers should seek out dispensers that are made from hardwearing materials that can withstand knocks and scratches.

It’s also wise to minimise touchpoints in washrooms where possible, so it’s worth seeking out no-touch soap dispensers, which automatically dispense when hands are placed underneath.

Finally, sustainability remains a key factor, so FMs should consider how they can make their washrooms more environmentally-friendly. Does your current system use recycled materials where possible, with no unnecessary

packaging? Is it designed to reduce over-use and create zero waste?

A hygiene hero

A solution like the North Shore premium proprietary system of washroom dispensers and consumables from Northwood, for instance, will help to deliver improved washroom hygiene standards, whilst also saving money and reducing waste.

North Shore delivers industry-leading capacity and supreme cost-in-use benefits. Easy to install and maintain, it’s durable, hygienic, and environmentally sustainable. The North Shore range offers users a choice of three wipe-clean hand towel dispensers, as well as the 5000-sheet capacity Orbit four roll infinity toilet dispenser and the compact 2500 sheet capacity Side-by-Side toilet roll dispenser.

Combining a number of hygiene-promoting features with strong green credentials, North Shore helps to curtail waste and over-use, reduce costs, and minimise the environmental impact. Ensuring 100% of the paper is used, both the Orbit and our 2500-sheet capacity Side-by-Side toilet roll dispensers prevent ‘free rolling’ and only allow access to the next roll once the current one has been used.

North Shore is designed to deliver zero waste and volume in use to reduce the amount of paper deliveries. This lessens the amount of packaging, reduces the number of stub rolls that are thrown away, and means fewer trucks on the road. All North Shore packaging (including cardboard cores, cardboard cartons, and paper and plastic wraps) is fully recyclable.

Washrooms are an essential element of any educational setting and, with the right solutions, facilities managers can ensure they are efficiently run whilst maximising hygiene and reducing the impact on the environment.
