Driving a green cleaning revolution

As client demand for green cleaning continues to soar, Peter Buff, Managing Director at Kingdom Cleaning, explains how a holistic approach to sustainability can drive a cleaning revolution.

Going green is firmly on the agenda. With one in three of the UK’s largest businesses leading the way by committing to align with government targets on carbon emissions, there’s unprecedented demand for partners and suppliers to address these ambitions.

When it comes to the cleaning and hygiene sector, sustainability has long been a consideration for manufacturers. From the raw materials they use to the way their processes are powered, many have taken steps to create truly ‘green’ products.

However, green cleaning goes beyond the materials used to do the job. We need to consider the entire supply chain when we commit to sustainability, from the products we choose to the way they are manufactured, distributed, and used in practice.

We should also look at our own operations to ensure our practices and people management are ethical and considerate. We should be considering the carbon impact of everything that we do and investing in the technology that enables us to drive change.

Our sustainability commitments

When it comes to the products and equipment that we use on client sites, we are wholly committed to reducing the amount of harmful materials and the volume of chemicals used in our operations.

Over the years we’ve worked closely with our suppliers to trial and roll out innovative cleaning systems and products. One of these has been our adoption of wholly organic cleaning solutions which use non-pathogenic bacteria to create enzymes for breaking down waste, soils, stains, and malodours. We have found Bio-Enzymatic cleaning to have increased efficacy in a number of applications.

We have also selected products which have more environmentally friendly packaging and dosing systems that reduce the amount of waste that we send to landfill. From minimising the waste we produce in the first place, to reusing machinery and equipment to give them a longer life, these steps can cut the amount sent to landfill or ending up in our oceans and waterways.

We have introduced our measure, reduce, and offset approach to carbon management. Our ‘no impact’ ethos also ensures that we can focus on further reducing our carbon emissions.

Collaborating with our sustainable solutions partner, Ethical Nation, we minimise running costs and increase our positive environmental profile. As a result, we have created and implemented a fully carbon neutral cleaning service at all our client locations.

Our fully carbon neutral cleaning system, C2Zero – for which we have received a neutralcarbonzone accreditation – calculates the precise carbon impact of every aspect of our service. It’s part of our standard package to customers, ensuring that all our operations are green and helping clients meet their own sustainability targets. By understanding and measuring in this way, we can offset the impact of our operations and return them to a carbon neutral position.

Investing in innovation

We have also recently begun rolling out our new 100% natural cleaning system, Toucan Eco, across client sites. It’s a salt solution which is electrolysed by a small electrical current. The process recombines naturally occurring elements to create an effective disinfectant and cleaning agent.

Safe and hypoallergenic, there’s no need for gloves and it’s harmless to the environment. Killing 99.99% of viruses and bacteria, it can be used on any kind of surface, including glass and fabrics.

This provides our teams with an eco-friendly cleaning solution that’s virtually free to make. As it’s refillable, it also eradicates waste, so no more single-use plastic pollution.

A greener future

Today, as eco-conscious customers increasingly demand sustainable partners, we have to look at our entire operation to ensure that every aspect is supporting their green ambitions. By taking a holistic approach, and investing in technology that can support these aims, we can offer a service that keeps both customers and our planet happy and healthy.
