houses 2500 shots of soap which will ensure that the unit will not run out when a hand-wash is urgently needed.
In cases where hand washing is impractical or inconvenient, staff should be encouraged to sanitise their hands using an alcohol gel or hand rub. Again, dispensers for these products should be easy to locate and convenient to use wherever they are needed.
Tork Alcohol Hand Sanitisers are available in dispensers for general use and in smaller formats that can be clipped to a patient’s bed or issued to a medical worker. Tork has issued a guide to optimum sanitiser dispenser placement at hospital entrances, nurses’ stations, in a single bed room and on a four-bed ward.
It’s important to combine the provision of hand hygiene products with training and strong messaging to ensure that these products are used. We at Essity have recently broadened the scope of our hand hygiene training module to make Tork VR Clean Hands Training – previously only available with the use of a virtual reality headset – accessible free of charge via any electronic device.

The training invites users into a digital world where they are confronted with a series of scenarios where hand hygiene needs to be carried out. Developed in collaboration with behavioural scientists and hand hygiene experts, the course aims to provide hand hygiene guidance in an engaging way.
It seems there is no one simple answer to improving hand hygiene compliance. The WHO recently came to this conclusion after collating the results of various global hand hygiene initiatives and noting that compliance rates rose when the provision of more sinks and sanitiser dispensers was combined with hand hygiene campaigns, posters and positive feedback for those who demonstrated good habits.
Healthcare facilities therefore need to ascertain the reasons behind poor compliance and ensure that they have the right products in place. When they combine these measures with staff prompts, regular encouragement and inspirational training, we may finally see an ongoing upward trend in hand hygiene compliance.
