New standards for education

also allows cleaning staff to focus more heavily on crucial touchpoints and high value tasks. Here, automated touch- free dispensers prevent cross-contamination across the site, further improving productivity.
Increasing visibility
When combined with the visible presence and expertise of an experienced cleaning team, the results that can be achieved by innovative new technologies are unparalleled. Technology is no replacement for human expertise, but a tool which enables cleaning staff to take care of the important detail work. Never underestimate the importance of a two-way partnership with the staff too, as providing a go-to representative to approach regarding any concerns establishes an honest, open and trusting working relationship, as well as eases any of the client’s initial concerns.
Reducing sickness
16 months on since the onset of the pandemic, people’s eyes have been opened to a new standard of cleanliness and hygiene – and even once we’ve emerged from the pandemic, the bar will not, and should not, be lowered.
In schools and educational facilities, enhanced cleaning procedures and preventative measures have been a vital part of keeping staff, pupils, and visitors safe from the risk of contracting or spreading COVID-19.
With this comes an increased awareness of the difference between cleanliness and hygiene. As a result, our industry has been thrown into the spotlight, with cleaning staff finally getting the exposure and recognition they deserve for providing reassurance and ensuring the safety of those who enter the school grounds. Perceptions of the cleaning industry are changing, and rightly so.
Embracing innovation
New, automated technologies are allowing cleaners to reach even higher standards of cleanliness and hygiene. Robotic scrubber dryers, for example, are far more efficient and effective than a traditional floor mop, and i-mops can reach the very edges of compact or partially obstructed spaces. Backpack vacuums are becoming smaller and lighter, reducing the risk of muscle strain while carrying or manoeuvring them, and cordless models minimise the risk of trips and falls.
Instead of spreading dirt like mops and buckets do, machinery enables dirt, pathogens, and bacteria to be removed from the surface entirely. Increased efficiency
35 | EDUCATIONAL AND SCHOOL FACILITIES
As we’ve witnessed over the last year, just one positive COVID test can lead to an entire year group isolating for a lengthy period, and staff shortages can prove extremely challenging. In schools, sickness can have a profound impact on pupils’ education and put a significant dent in the organisations’ bottom line. Post-pandemic, we must continue to exercise extra caution to lesser considered touchpoints such as touchscreen devices, keyboards, paper towel dispensers and waste disposal units.
One-touch paper towel dispensers minimise cross- contamination and ensure that each sheet of tissue is only touched by one person, reducing the transfer of bacteria. Replacing individual bins with bin pods reduces the need to come into contact with several touchpoints while using or emptying the bin. Disposable cloths are ideal for eliminating the spread of pathogens and bacteria, but colour-coded microfibre cloths may also be used – picking up even the smallest, most microscopic dirt particles – provided they are washed at 60°C immediately after use.
Changing attitudes
Over the past year, school leaders have had to reassess the measures they have in place and determine whether their cleaning providers consistently meet the school’s high standards or repeatedly fall short. There's been no margin for error, and no time for mistakes.
Post-pandemic, it’s imperative that we, as an industry, continue to raise the bar by working alongside game- changing technologies, investing heavily in innovation, and continuing to effectively prevent sickness amongst our country’s youngest generations.
