Primary barrier matting and secondary barrier matting can deliver a range of safety and maintenance benefits, as well as helping to improve aesthetics. Karen Burman, Product Manager for Gradus, looks at how matting can be used effectively, both front of house and throughout a building.

Ideal for use at points of entry, primary barrier matting can be used both internally and externally to help to remove walked-in dirt and moisture. Secondary barrier matting provides an additional barrier that resembles the appearance of carpet, whilst offering the moisture-retention properties and scrape-off cleaning function of matting. It is therefore ideal for internal locations prone to heavy traffic and excess soil and moisture.

Installing both primary and secondary barrier matting together not only provides additional performance benefits, but can also help to create a visually co-ordinated entrance that can help to improve the overall appearance of a building and complement its overall design scheme.

One of the most important benefits of fitting a co-ordinated primary and secondary matting system is the role it can play in creating a safer environment for building users. According to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), wet flooring causes 90% of slip accidents in public buildings. When correctly installed, primary and secondary

matting offers increased protection against such slips, especially in areas prone to moisture ingress. Here, a combined matting system offers optimum moisture-retention and removal, preventing it from being tracked in and around a building.

Primary barrier matting wipers remove heavy tracked-in moisture, whilst secondary barrier matting ensures that any excess moisture is not transferred to neighbouring floorcoverings.

The key is to install as much matting as possible in order to minimise tracked-in dirt and moisture, helping to maintain the appearance and longevity of surrounding floorcoverings. In addition, it will help to reduce cleaning and maintenance requirements throughout the building.

Secondary barrier matting is easy to install and, when used in conjunction with primary barrier matting, is an ideal way to extend the amount of matting within a specific area.

Secondary barrier matting can also be fitted in areas away from external entrances that are subject to heavy traffic, such as reception areas, canteen and vending areas, lift lobbies and staircases. Here, secondary barrier matting will provide greater additional moisture retention and durability.

When installed correctly, a combined primary and secondary barrier matting system can prevent the transfer of dirt and moisture into internal areas but its performance can be compromised if the matting area is not sufficiently maintained.

Any area of matting should be vacuumed daily to avoid a build-up of dirt and debris, which can clog up in the mat’s structure.

Periodic deep cleaning, together with the use of certain detergents to remove heavy stains, is also advisable. The volume of foot traffic and amount of soiling will often determine the frequency and type of cleaning required, so a tailored cleaning programme should be developed. FRONT OF HOUSE | 45
