To deliver safety and style when redeveloping one of Scotland’s largest colleges,

contractors trusted COBA Flooring to provide durable and aesthetically striking entrance matting for the facility.

Situated at the heart of the City of Glasgow College, the stunning Riverside Campus delivered phase one of a £228m supercampus development in Glasgow on time and within budget in August 2015, using entrance matting from COBA Flooring.

The main building is an eight storey ultra- modern construction, providing dramatic views across the city, and features an attractive, light and airy atrium. Riverside Campus includes classrooms and workshops equipped with the latest technology, as well as a pioneering Marine Skills Centre. It is home to some 2000 marine and engineering students, as well as 250 staff. The campus also has an 11-storey student accommodation block and landscaped recreation areas.

volume of students, staff and other visitors passing through the doors on a daily basis. The design of the entrance area takes this footfall into consideration, including the specification of the entrance matting. A slightly smaller side entrance also required entrance matting. Both entrance areas feature circular revolving door systems, which was a factor in the entrance matting specification process.

Plan.a aluminium entrance matting, manufactured by COBA Flooring, was specified in view of the product’s credentials for durability and, of course, its aesthetic appeal. Plan.a entrance matting was made to order and the college chose to have its City of Glasgow College logo incorporated into the design, taking advantage of COBA’s ability to integrate an inlaid custom printed Logomat.

COBA Flooring custom-manufactured the matting to accommodate the primary and secondary entrance zones; the primary element featuring the circular revolving door system, liaising with Sir Robert McAlpine and the flooring installation company, Veitchi Flooring, to ensure it was right first time. Matting for the main entrance spanned some 10.7m wide x 2.7m deep and 7m wide x 3.2m deep.

Built by main contractor Sir Robert McAlpine and designed by Michael Laird and Reiach and Hall Architects, it has been the subject of a 2015 Design Award in Education and was recently nominated in the Scottish Property Awards. Phase two of the project, a second City Campus, is due for completion in August 2016, with the final phase scheduled for 2017.

Fergal McCauley, Head of Facilities Management at the City of Glasgow College, said: “We are pleased with the entrance matting system, and the logo is an eye-catching addition for visitors as they enter the building. It is effectively helping to trap moisture and dirt on entry, reducing cleaning requirements within the main atrium area.”

Plan.a is a high quality, heavy-duty aluminium entrance matting system, manufactured in the UK by COBA Flooring, the specialist flooring division

of COBA Europe Ltd. Plan.a is custom made to order and popular for a wide variety of busy commercial entrances, from hotels, leisure and shopping centres, to offices and schools. It makes an ideal ‘front of house’ choice for a wide variety of buildings subjected to high levels of footfall.

From a flooring contractor’s perspective, Plan.a (despite being an aluminium system) is flexible, easy to handle and install. This flexibility is derived from durable PVC linking joints, which enables the matting to be rolled back and adjusted if necessary during the installation process.

There is the choice of three insert materials, either carpet (nylon, needlepunch) or PVC scraper inserts with the ability to choose from one, or a combination of, insert options. Plan.a entrance matting can be selected in two heights; low profile or standard profile with the option of a ‘closed’ or ‘open’ surface finish depending on preference.

A further option is to incorporate an inlaid custom printed Logomat within the Plan.a design, as City of Glasgow College has done. Logos are printed onto a durable, solution-dyed nylon mat with a rubber backing which is then integrated within the chosen entrance matting product through COBA Flooring’s rubber bonding process.
