ON THE BALL Top flooring tips from F. Ball and Co. Ltd.

Stephen Boulton, F. Ball and Co. Ltd.’s Technical Service Manager, discusses the importance of using pressure sensitive adhesives.

In recent years, the popularity of vinyl floorcoverings has soared and contractors are facing an increase in demand for floorcoverings of this type, particularly in retail and healthcare environments.

Chosen for their attractive, easy- care and hardwearing features, vinyl floorcoverings are also a popular choice in domestic installations, such as in kitchens and bathrooms. To ensure the best possible finish in these installations, manufacturer of subfloor preparation products, F. Ball and Co. Ltd., developed pressure sensitive adhesives.

Pressure sensitive adhesives, such as Styccobond F46, have been developed specifically to meet the particular requirements of vinyl floorcoverings. When applied, these adhesives dry to a permanently tacky film and the bond-strength increases as pressure is applied, providing maximum flexibility when laying vinyl. Furthermore, these adhesives can be rolled with a pre- coated paint roller after application with a notched trowel, reducing the risk

of ‘grin through’ from trowel serrations, which can sometimes be seen through thinner floorcoverings such as vinyl. This results in a more aesthetically pleasing finish of the installation.

WHY CHOOSE PRESSURE SENSITIVE

ADHESIVES? There are a number of other benefits that come with pressure sensitive adhesives. For example, they have the unique ability to facilitate the laying of impervious floorcoverings directly onto non-absorbent surfaces, including surface-applied damp proof membranes. This overcomes the need for smoothing underlayments to be applied over a smooth, non-absorbent subfloor, where appropriate, offering significant savings in time and money.

However, the key attribute of pressure sensitive adhesives is their infinite open time, which helps to reduce the risk of late placement that can be a common problem, particularly on large installations. The adhesive remains permanently receptive, meaning that

large areas of floorcovering can be laid in a single application of the adhesive. This saves both time and money for contractors, and is ideal for fast track installations.

THE ‘PERFECT FIT’ Styccobond F46, a solvent-free pressure sensitive acrylic adhesive, can be used for securing a wide range of PVC and tile vinyl floorcoverings and offers excellent plasticiser resistance and coverage rates, high bond-strength and protection against bio-degradation. It can also be used over underfloor heating systems and is approved for marine use.

Using products that are not suitable for the job, particularly when installing vinyl floorcoverings, can lead to a sub-optimal finish or, in some instances, the need for costly remedial work. Pressure sensitive adhesives, like Styccobond F46, provide the optimal system for installing vinyl floorcoverings, meaning that you can save time, money and achieve first- class results every time.
