RISE OF THE MACHINES

The Preparation Group demonstrates the importance of properly preparing subfloors mechanically.

The preparation of subfloors is critical to ensure the success of the finished system, coating, resin or screed. An unprepared or incorrectly prepared surface can impact on the application, aesthetic result and durability of the subsequent floor finish and is costly to remedy.

These case studies carried out by The Preparation Group’s Contracting division, PPC, are projects where the finished system failed due to incorrect subfloor preparation, the flooring material was to be replaced or where special restrictions were in place.

REMOVING PAINT

The Problem Layers of old paint on the floor of a barracks storeroom were starting to lift. The laitance, commonly termed ‘fat’, on the original concrete hadn’t been removed and without a suitable ‘key’ the paint had not adhered.

The Solution The heavy duty Terrco 701-S Grinding & Polishing Machine was employed, attached to a TS750PN 3 phase vacuum, to remove both the paint and laitance from the 160m2 area. A hand-held grinder completed the edge detail.

The Outcome The project took one day, delivering a clean profiled surface suitable for the application of non-slip grey paint and resulted in a durable floor suitable for heavy foot traffic and that required minimal maintenance.

STRIPPING OLD VINYL

AND CARPET The Problem Over 7,300m of carpet and vinyl had to be lifted across two floors of a department store complete with the underlying adhesive, ready to receive a new DPM, latex and floorcovering.

The Solution The first stage was to remove the old sheet material using the 600 Ride-on Multi-Stripper fitted with a wing-tipped blade. This was then followed by 250 Grinders fitted with PCD’s to remove the remaining latex and adhesive and then standard diamonds to smooth the surface. All dust and debris was collected through attachment to M450 industrial vacuums.

The Outcome The project was completed within two weeks. The finished result was a flat profile ready for the installation of the new flooring system.
