Carpet Recycling UK
ABOUT THIS SERVICE...
According to the latest figures from Carpet Recycling UK (CRUK), approximately 65% of textile flooring waste is being diverted from landfill through its members, the sector and wider waste industry. Around 430,000 tonnes of carpet and textile waste arises annually in the UK.
CRUK is spearheading the drive to recycle and repurpose this material in a circular economy approach that reduces waste, recovers reusable resources and ultimately protects the environment.
Company Profile
Set up in 2008, Carpet Recycling UK (CRUK) helps the UK carpet and textile flooring sector to become more sustainable by expanding and promoting options for reuse, recycling and treatment of this waste, recognising it as a valuable resource, and diverting waste from landfill.
The not-for-profit, 107-strong membership association is regarded as the ‘go-to’ authority for sustainability in the sector. Members include businesses and organisations from every stage of the carpet supply chain, together with recyclers and equipment providers.
A key focus is supporting and promoting more circular design that would enable carpet and textile flooring to be more readily recycled through closed loop initiatives, thereby reducing all forms of waste. Representing and supporting the flooring sector against a backdrop of challenging government policy changes is another important aspect of CRUK’s work.
To help the industry cope with these challenges, CRUK develops and produces guidance on how companies can adapt to meet future sustainability requirements.
“We are encouraging the sector to work with us and take voluntary steps forward to invest in design for recycling”, said Adnan Zeb- Khan, Carpet Recycling UK Manager. “We have to ‘fly the flag’ for sustainable products and design for recycling, so that if and when policies change, the sector is one step ahead and stands to benefit from more favourable terms, given their favourable stance.”
Facilitating connections through its extensive network is another key role. CRUK achieves this by working with businesses in the supply chain, government and academia to foster collaborations and networks to achieve viable market-based solutions, encouraging design for recyclability.
