CLEANING UP FOR CHRISTMAS


The most wonderful time of the year can also be the most stressful for those in the cleaning industry, so says Jangro Operations Director Joanne Gilliard. Here she discusses how to tackle the pressure that the festive period places on cleaning businesses.


It’s a time of merriment, but also mess. Thrills, but also spills. Whilst the festive period usually lifts spirits, it also places additional pressure on the cleaning industry, from staff cleaning up after party-goers in bars and restaurants to single operatives struggling to fit in additional ‘domestic deep cleans’ before the arrival of Christmas guests. It’s also a time when winter germs and bugs are rife, meaning hygiene is of paramount importance. So what can be done to ease these stresses?


Detailed planning and effective supervision is key at such a busy time. Form a plan and communicate it, ensuring supervisors and cleaning staff know what is expected. Amend cleaning operatives’ checklists by incorporating the extra tasks and work out if the workload is realistic and manageable. With limited time, planning may involve recruiting seasonal staff, temporarily omitting tasks, or moving them around on certain days to accommodate the additional workload.


DOMESTIC DEEP CLEANS


AND OFFICE CLEAN-UPS December often sees an increase in business for domestic cleaners: after all, we all like to have a clean and tidy house to welcome Christmas visitors. These ‘one-time’ jobs are a great opportunity to turn one-off customers into loyal, long- term clients, introducing them to the benefits of cleaning: convenience, time-savings and even improved health.


Offices also benefit from deep-cleaning at Christmas: research suggests there is a positive correlation between productivity and a clean and tidy work space. After a year of eating ‘al-desko’, biscuit-munching in the boardroom, and a month of Christmas decorations, such workplaces need a thorough clean before re-opening in the New Year. Windows, carpets, washrooms – in fact, everything from the office fridge to the computer keyboard is rife with bacteria which will spread and cause illness come January if it is not hygienically cleaned.


It may sound obvious, but one simple way to ease pressure and boost productivity is to ensure you have the right tools and products for the job, for example by choosing chemicals that are easy to dose correctly to reduce the overall time taken to complete tasks. HOSPITALITY BUSINESSES Footfall across shopping centres, restaurants, and pubs is at its peak in December, and just as these businesses see an increase in customers, so too will their washroom facilities. They must therefore be well-stocked, have dispensers in good working order – and crucially be easy-to-use.


The best toilet-tissue dispensers distribute the right amount of paper, helping reduce wastage, and hold several rolls or packets of tissue, decreasing the number of refills required and minimising the risk of running empty.


The washroom’s other main job is to ensure that everyone leaving it has hygienic, clean hands – especially when winter germs are rife.
