We all know that the contract cleaning industry is very competitive. Sometimes, the only way cleaning contractors can make some ‘real money’ cleaning their customers’ facilities is by adding some additional mobile services.


We’ve all heard about the more common add-on services: carpet cleaning; floor refinishing; window cleaning; landscaping. Some cleaning contractors are even adding mailroom, security, and concierge services for their client’s staff and visitors.


Some of these are better ‘breadwinners’ than others. It's time to think mobile and one that few seem to be looking into is bus cleaning, including school buses, minibuses, even public transportation. We’re not talking about the outside of the bus, although that can be offered, but the inside. That’s where the germs are, although many school administrators are not even aware of this.


Just so we are on the same page, we should clarify a few things about school buses. In the US, there are thousands of yellow school buses transporting students to and from school every day throughout the country. This is far less common in the UK, where many children walk to school, are driven by their parents, or take public transportation. However, at least

one city – Manchester – does have a school bus system very similar to what is found across the pond.


What is common in England is for individual schools to have their own minibuses. These are often used to transport sports teams from one school to another, take students to community events or museums, or just used to make a day trip to the sea or across the country.


However they are used, here is what we need to know: the interiors of these buses can become seriously soiled. According to the National Education Association in the US: “Mobile environments are prone to the spread of infectious diseases such as colds and the flu. In addition to the number of students who may introduce bacteria and viruses when they board the bus, surfaces such as the seatbacks and handrails can also contribute to the further spread of
