Big shoes to fill

Paul Thrupp, the new Chairman of the British Cleaning Council (BCC), looks at what lies ahead for him, the Council, and the wider cleaning industry.

After two years of writing this column as the BCC’s Deputy Chair, I am very proud to be sharing my thoughts with you today as the new BCC Chairman.

I’m under no illusion that Stan Atkins, the outgoing Chair, will be a very tough act to follow – and I would like to pay

tribute to all of his hard work and achievements while in the Chairman’s role.

This includes helping to streamline the BCC’s grant giving programme – meaning that smaller and more innovative projects can now be supported without the need for match-funding – and successfully growing The Cleaning Show in both London and Manchester.

trade associations where we have similar aspirations and shared values.

I am also greatly looking forward to working closely with the BCC’s new Deputy Chair, Jim Melvin from the CSSA.

With 27 years’ experience in the sector, Jim has held many senior management roles including Operations Director at Pall Mall, Divisional Managing Director at Broadreach Services, and MD at Strand Cleaning in London.

In 2013 he joined The Exclusive Services Group as Managing Director and he is now their Chief Executive. He’s also a Court Assistant with the Worshipful Company of Environmental Cleaners and a member of BICSc.

"I am very proud to be sharing my

Stan also worked tirelessly behind the scenes to find areas where there was common ground and shared priorities between our very diverse membership. This resulted in some excellent work undertaken around the issue of skills, the need to attract more young people into the industry, and the image of cleaning in general.

thoughts with you today as the new BCC Chairman."

Having worked alongside him I know he was passionate about these and other key industry issues, and I fully intend to carry on pursuing many of the same agendas during my time as Chairman.

Other issues I want to explore more include specific things like the role of apprenticeships within the cleaning sector and also how we as an industry can work together on issues like the Living Wage, operative health and wellbeing, fairer procurement and raising standards.

I’m also interested in where automation and ‘Industry 4.0’ technologies might be utilised more effectively within cleaning, and any subsequent impact on employment, plus how do we innovate more in the face of challenges like climate change.

To help do that I intend to work even more closely with the existing BCC membership – which has now grown to over 20 organisations – and other industry partners, influencers and policy makers.

One result of this could see us engaging more directly with central government on issues which are of major importance to the cleaning sector, and reaching out to other

But what some people may not know is that Jim has also had another career within professional football and coaching, and I am convinced that his experience in the dressing room – and on the training ground – will stand us both in good stead when comes to getting the best out of the Council’s membership.

In fact, a ‘squad’ or ‘team’ is probably a good way to sum up my view of the BCC as an organisation. All of our members have different strengths and excel in different

positions meaning my job, with Jim’s assistance, is to utilise the various skills we have at our disposal and develop a game plan

that plays to our collective strengths.

Of course, having 22 different organisations to work with means we have lot of options with regards to who we play in which position and when – but it’s this breadth and depth of the BCC’s membership which truly makes it the ‘voice of cleaning’.

But before I get too carried away with football analogies I just wanted to say I’m greatly looking forward to my role as the new BCC Chairman, and I’m confident that with the support of Jim, the Council membership, and our industry partners, we have a fantastic opportunity to build on the great work already undertaken in recent years by Stan and many other colleagues.
