Paper Round gets massive upgrade

Paper Round has upgraded their Materials Recycling Facility (MRF) with a £2.5m investment, following one of the key targets of recent Government consultations.

Established in 1988 by Friends of the Earth and now a separate commercial company, Paper Round collects a wide spectrum of waste including mixed recycling, food, general waste, paper, glass, coffee grounds, coffee cups, electrical and furniture, cardboard, IT, batteries, toners and hazardous waste.

The MRF’s improvements mean a 300% increase in capacity and a much higher capability to drive up recycling rates through an end-to-end process.

Council impressed with green practices

Burgess Hill Town Mayor, Cllr Roger Cartwright, Town Council Leader Cllr Robert Egglestone and Deputy Leader Cllr Joe Foster, recently paid a visit to local environmentally- friendly cleaning product manufacturer, Bio-Productions.

Accompanied by Managing Director, Angela Gill, the visitors were given a tour of the company’s HQ on the Victoria Business Park, where they had the chance to see the factory’s production line first-hand. They took in the whole site from the offices and boardroom, through the laboratory, research and development and wet and dry production to labelling, packaging and the warehouse.

Throughout the visit, Angela and Operations Director, Phil Karn, showcased the diverse products that make up Bio- Productions’ catalogue, which has significantly expanded since business began in 1984.

Angela Gill said: “It was a pleasure to showcase our company to the Council‘s top representatives. We are proud of our team here in Burgess Hill from where we manufacture and export our biological solutions globally. Our aim is to encourage local businesses, restaurants and schools to become greener and support local industry.”

Judging begins for Loo of the Year 2019

The Loo of the Year Awards inspection team are now completing the inspection of thousands of 2019 Loo of the Year Awards entrant’s washrooms throughout the UK, including many new entrants.

The inspection criteria are based on fitness for purpose: Are they clean? Do they provide all the facilities that users will require? Do they meet Building Regulations Doc M and Equality Act dimensions, and the needs of users that require accessible toilets or Changing Places facilities? Do they provide adequate facilities for babies and children? Are they attractive – light, inviting and have the ‘wow’ factor?

Judging for the range of National and UK/Ireland awards and trophies will be completed during October and the results will be announced at the Loo of the Year Awards’ daytime event on Friday 6 December, at the St Johns Hotel, Solihull.

Mike Bone, Managing Director of Loo of the Year Awards, said: “Leading cleaning company and FM company representatives attend the prestigious event which includes excellent hospitality, a washroom supplier’s exhibition, top class entertainment and unrivalled networking opportunities among leading cleaning and FM service providers and their key customers.”

The new MRF includes three Optical Sorters, capable of picking out different materials, separate polymers and different fibres, a Waste Screen that separates fibres less than 50mm and an Eddy Current separator, used to separate nonferrous metals such as aluminium cans. It’s also equipped to separate 2D and 3D products with the installation of a Ballistic Separator.

Paper Round’s facility will continue to be one of the largest dedicated clean MRF in London and South East, only accepting commercial waste. This results in higher recycling rates due to less contaminated materials.

The launch is planned for later this summer and will be open to clients.

Cllr Egglestone said: “The town is fortunate to have such an innovative company like Bio-Productions providing marketing-leading, environmentally-friendly products around the world. The company has made us think hard about how we can use public procurement to bring more environmentally-friendly products into facilities and to a wider audience. We understand that the company wants to expand and, as town councillors, we want to use what influence we can to help it realise its ambitions for its business.”
